This and That

Josh is chiming in on this week’s addition of This and That!-note the “His” and “Hers” sections:) Enjoy!

His

1. I put together Caleb’s high chair and he was interested in the box, so I put him in it. He went nuts and played for about an hour.

2. I love the movie “Top Gun” and have always been interested in flying. I don’t have any interest in sky diving though. I saw this crazy sky diving story this week-check it out. You won’t find me sky diving anytime soon.

3. One of the reasons I love Salt Lake City is the access to all of the outdoor activities, especially mountain biking. I am excited for summer riding. I currently have this Specialized bike. I bought the frame and built the rest of the bike. I also have these Rims with an X-7 Groupo.

4. Caleb and I have been watching a lot of playoff NBA basketball. We are routing for Oklahoma City. I really mean we because Caleb really gets into it also. I say “Go O.K.C.” and he gets really excited, laughs and throws his hands up. It is great having a little buddy to watch sports with.

5. I heard a story on the radio about a man who was eating a grilled hamburger and got a piece of wire that had come off a wire cleaning brush pierce his esophagus and puncture a hole in his heart. Since then I have heard some other stories about pieces of wire brush being swallowed and doing physical harm. I cleaned our grill this week and checked to see if any wire pieces were left behind and I found some. I washed the grill and made sure there were no pieces left before I grilled up our chicken and veggies. So grilling frineds-pay attention to your grilling surfaces this summer. Just a little warning!

Hers

1. My good friend, Brittany, is the owner of the fabulous store, Bake It Pretty. Last week she invited us up to take a little tour of the warehouse. Oh. My. Word. I was like a little kid in a candy store! I wanted 100 of everything! Bake It Pretty also has the best selection of baking liners. So many fun colors and designs…and the mini ones are super cute. The variety packs of party straws are perfect for food bloggers:) I also fell in love with the milk bottles and their Best Ever Cupcake Icing Kit.

I can’t wait to use all of my new pretties for baking! And good news-you can shop Bake It Pretty online! Don’t blame me if you buy the entire store. I am warning you, you will want it ALL! Happy shopping:)

2. Adding this Free Form Vegetarian Lasagna to our dinner menu. Love it!

3. Who is watching So You Think You Can Dance?  I’ve always been a fan of the show. I am not a dancer-I was a cheerleader in high school-no comments-ha!-but I’ve always enjoyed watching dance. And the auditions are always entertaining:)

4. I love these produce calendars that break down the seasonal availability of fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

5. Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Sandwiches-make them happen! You can thank me later:)

6. Love these free printable jar labels! Maybe someday I will print them and get organized:)

7. In one week we will be on a plane to Seattle for BlogHer Food. I’ve never been to Seattle-do you have any restaurant, bakery, or other recommendations for us? And if you are going to BHF, make sure you say hello! And yes, Caleb will be there too!

  1. That picture of Caleb is so cute! Babies are so cute when they play with new things. It’s amazing that they can entertain themselves for so long with something so simple. I love that 🙂 I’m not going to BHF this year 🙁 I’ll be too busy moving…I wish I were so I could meet you, Josh, and Caleb! There has to be another time. I love this series, great job 🙂 now you have me checking out those printables! hehe

  2. That grill brush story scares me! I’m not letting Josh use ours any more ;). Your little peanut is so darn cute. Going to checkout that Free form lasagna recipe. I was totally a cheerleader too (I actually almost cheered in college too, but I broke my hand and decided to stop!). I loveeeeeeee SYTYCD! Hope you guys are doing well <3

  3. Hi Maria and Josh! Long time reader, first time commenter – but I had to comment after I read that you’re going to Seattle, my hometown! You’ll have a great time 🙂

Food you should definitely try can be found at Paseo in Fremont, for the best Cuban sandwiches ever, Molly Moon’s Ice Cream, with amazing flavors like Honey Lavender and Balsamic Strawberry, and The 5 Spot on Queen Anne, for a delicious breakfast!

If the weather’s nice, there are lots of gorgeous parks around where you can get great views and Caleb can play. He might also like the Aquarium and the Pacific Science Center, they’re geared towards older kids but there should be lots for him to explore nonetheless! Seattle Center also has an awesome ‘interactive’ fountain – I don’t want to spoil it, but watch this video around 3:00 and you’ll see! 😀 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yTUtwCiqrU

  4. UM GOING TO GO CHECK MY GRILL NOW. That’s scary.

Maria – I love So You Think You Can Dance! Watching that show puts me in a good mood and, of course, makes me wanna DANCE.

  5. Josh – Something similar happened to a man in NJ – he thought he had appendicitis but it turned out a piece of wire perforated his intestine! Many people are now recommending you use a grilling stone or cleaning block instead of a wire brush. I bet you can find them at hardware stores.
Maria – that store is dangerous! I’m planning a party for the summer and I might need to order ahead – in bulk!
I love reading about your little man! He must be barrels of fun!

  6. I wish I was going just so I could meet that little cutie! 🙂 but I’ll be on a plane to the Philippines instead! Hope you have a great time!

  7. When in Seattle, there are SO many places, but here are some favorites:
I second Molly Moon’s Ice Cream: homemade ice cream and just yummy
    Macrina Bakery: Lots of yummies
Theo Chocolate: Organic Free Trade Chocolate made in Seattle. They have a tour, what could be better than just tasting chocolate for an hour!?
    Peso’s for breakfast, it’s amazing.
    Delancy for pizza of course..
Have so much fun, Seattle is a wonderful city with so much to do!

  8. Super cute post. Wish I was coming to Seattle!! I opened up half the links you linked to…time to go check things out. 🙂

  9. I love Seattle. There are many great restaurants in the city. A fe weeks ago we went to Staple and Fancy and there of course is also the food bloggers mecca Delancey. Of course there is Pike Pike Market that cannot be missed!

  10. Have breakfast at Lola’s. You can make a reservation and then hop across the street to Delilah’s bakery for snacks during the day. You won’t be sorry!

  11. Wow, the wire brush thing is scary! I’m going to forward that information on to my parents. Thanks for sharing it. And Bake It Pretty–I could get lost there for days.

  12. Can’t wait to meet you!!!! 🙂 I’ll tell Curtis about the grill, yikes!! And I love bake it pretty, love that cupcake tips kit!!

  13. oh goodness, that picture of Caleb in the box is precious! Can’t wait to see you guys next week!!

  15. As if I wasn’t excited enough to meet you … now Caleb?! 🙂 Too much.

  16. Now I’m gonna be freaked out about bristles in my grilled food… thanks Josh lol. Maria… my girls are GLUED to the tv during SYTYCD. It’s hilarious. They get up and try to copy what they see.

  17. I love so you think you can dance! It’s the only one of the “talent reality” shows that I watch.

  18. I love reading your blog! And, today was no exception. And, YIKES, about the wire brush 🙁

Congratulations on being a cheerleader! My daughter cheered mid school, high and Division 1 college – as flier…she is incredibly physically fit, competing through high school which was incredibly rigorous (winning a nat’l championship in Atlanta). The fitness regimen in hs was more strenuous than the football players and they recognized it and even said so 🙂
Anyway, don’t apologize for a sport that highlights working together (team effort), physical fitness, performance and top grades required! (and, btw, 2 of our hs cheerleaders in the last 8 years have been Morehead Scholars, a competition with many hs seniors in NC – a full ride to UNC Chapel Hill and lots and lots of international travel and many other perks!!! Cheerleaders both male and female can be the “very best”…well, I will get down off my soap box =)

Have fun in Seattle – my husband travels every summer from WNC to Bristol Bay to fish for salmon commercially – Seattle is a wonderful stopping place!!!

  19. Josh terrified me with the wire thing!! goodness gracious!! and I love Seattle! I have only been there once a long time ago, before I was half as interested in food as I am now. My only suggestion is to challenge yourself to find your favorite coffee in the city! 🙂 Enjoy, M&J!

  20. A couple can’t miss spots in Seattle are Paseo (already mentioned) there are two locations, Fremont and Shilshole, the latter is right on the beach. It’s nothing fancy, just incredible sandwiches. I would also recommend nearby, Cafe Bessalu in Ballard, this is easily the best bakery I’ve ever been to. Every single think I’ve tried has blown my mind but they are known for their croissants, I would also recommend the cardamom pretzel.

  21. Yup, grill brush and SYTYCD points stood out for me too! We’re freaking out about the grill brush!!!!!

  22. The Metropolitan Market – an AMAZING grocery store. They always have samples and I love the bulk candy section. I liked hearing from Josh on this post!!!

  23. Caleb looks really adorable playing in that box! & i love bake it pretty too! You’re incredibly lucky to be able to see all the supplies!

  24. Great tip on the grill brush! Scary!! Going to have to check ours! And I definitely need to check out bake it pretty!

  25. Caleb just keeps getting cuter and cuter!! SO happy for the three of you!
Josh, thanks for the tip about the wire brush! It’s grilling season all year long here in AZ, but I never check and I don’t think my husband ever does either. Very good to know!

  26. We’re rooting for the Thunder too. They’re playing in San Antonio day after tomorow nd were here! It’s going to get rowdy. As for Bake it Pretty, that’s heaven to me!

  27. I heart So You Think You Can Dance!! I even sent in an audition tape once. I watch the British version (I live in Belgium), but love love love it. That and Strictly Come Dancing =)
