What is Gnocchi?

If you aren’t familiar with gnocchi, let me introduce you. We eat gnocchi all of the time, it is one of our favorite meals. Gnocchi are fluffy, Italian-style dumplings made of potatoes and flour.

So how do you pronounce gnocchi? The proper, Italian way is nyawk-kee. Some also pronounce it NYO-kee. You can make it from scratch, it isn’t hard, but we like to use DeLallo’s gnocchi because it tastes just like homemade gnocchi without any work! It only takes a few minutes to cook, making it the perfect quick and easy dinner!

  • Gnocchi
  • Fresh mozzarella cheese

How to Make One Skillet Gnocchi

  • Use an oven-safe large skillet to make the gnocchi.
  • Heat the olive oil over medium-high heat and add the garlic. Cook for 2 minutes.
  • Add your favorite marinara sauce to the skillet, you will need three cups. We love all of DeLallo’s sauces. You can also use homemade marinara sauce if you have it on hand, we like to keep some in the freezer at all times. Make sure you use a GOOD sauce because it will make a difference in the taste. With only five ingredients, you need the five ingredients to be good.
  • Add the gnocchi straight from the package, separating any gnocchi that are stuck together. DO NOT COOK the gnocchi first, it will cook right in the sauce. Remember, this is a ONE skillet meal.
  • Cook until the gnocchi are soft and cooked through, about 5 to 6 minutes. Stir occasionally to make sure the gnocchi doesn’t stick to the skillet.
  • Place slices of fresh mozzarella cheese evenly on top of the gnocchi. Preheat the broiler. When the broiler is hot, place the skillet in the oven under the broiler until the cheese melts, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Remove and garnish with fresh basil and crushed red pepper flakes, if using. Serve immediately.

This cheesy, saucy gnocchi will remind you of lasagna, but SO much easier. The next time you need a quick and easy dinner with easy clean up, make this 5-Ingredient Skillet Gnocchi. I guarantee it will become one of your go to dinners!

Made this tonight – it was really good and super easy! I used a spicy marinara and whole wheat gnocchi. Soooo yummy!  Thank you for a great, fast weeknight meal!

  2. Have you tried to make this with Trader Joe’s cauliflower gnocchi? If so, are there any adjustments you made?

Amazing! Made this tonight and it was delicious. My first time ever eating gnocchi. So easy to make as well. Perfect weeknight dinner!

  4. I love all kinds of potatoes but I did not like this dish. The gnocchi tasted doughy and the big globs of mozzarella cheese didn’t add anything to it.

  5. Made this tonight with my college daughter And she wanted comfort food (Italian!)…we added sweet mild Italian sausage to the sauce and it turned out just like your photo plus it was everything she wanted…no leftovers between my husband, her and myself -we served with a side Caesar chopped salad Kit. Delicious!

  6. Is this a dried or refrigerated gnocchi and would it make a difference which one I used? I also have purchased frozen in the past…..they’re all very versatile and fast!

    1. I used dried gnocchi, look for it in the pasta aisle. I am sure refrigerated or frozen will work too though.
