Zucchini Fries – A Healthy Alternative

I am not a French fry kind of gal. I love baked sweet potato fries, but the deep-fried French fries don’t appeal to me. I had some zucchini that needed to be used, so I decided to try baked zucchini fries.

I asked Josh if he wanted some of my fries and he turned up his nose. I was kind of surprised because he loves baked sweet potato fries too and most vegetables. He didn’t like the idea of baking zucchini and calling them fries though. They sounded “too healthy” to be good. So I went on my merry way preparing the zucchini fries. He decided to make some zucchini fries too-but he fried his in olive oil on the stove.

Taste Test: Fried vs. Baked Zucchini Fries

When we sat down to eat dinner together, he asked if he could try one of MY healthy fries. I already tasted one, so I knew they were downright delicious, so of course, I shared:) He tasted one, and then another and another. He loved them! He thought my baked zucchini fries were much better than his fried fries. Ha! The healthy fries win! Yahoo!

If you are looking for a healthy alternative to fries, give these zucchini fries try. We dipped them in a homemade marinara sauce. You can use store-bought if you wish. These baked zucchini fries make a great side to any meal or a fun snack! Don’t forget about this recipe-I know it will come in handy when you have summer zucchini growing out your ears:)

Baked Zucchini Fries

4.67 from 3 votes

Ingredients

  • 3 medium zucchini sliced into skinny sticks
  • 2 large egg whites beaten
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat bread crumbs we make our own
  • 2 T grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 tsp dried basil
  • Pinch of dried oregano
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425°. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray. Set aside.
  • In a small bowl, beat egg whites with a fork until frothy.
  • Put the breadcrumbs, basil, oregano, garlic powder and cheese on a plate-I used a pie tin. Mix well.
  • Dip the zucchini sticks in the egg whites and then into the bread crumb mixture, make sure all sides get coated well. Place the sticks on the prepared baking sheet. I did the sticks one by one.
  • Bake at 425° for about 20 minutes or until golden brown and a little crispy. I turned over the fries half way through. Serve warm. We like to dip ours in marinara sauce.

  20. Healthy fries win? Nooo, as a guy I have to contest this. Just kidding 🙂 Of course I’d go for the healthier ones. Can’t afford not to (burp!).

  21. I always say that frying makes just about any veggie taste better. Fried zucchini was an early way to get me to eat zucchini as a child.

I think I could definitely get into having them baked up nice and crispy though. Lots of good flavors going on here with the garlic and basil. I love doing oven sweet potato fries too.

  22. I do love fried foods but when/if I can avoid frying without sacrificing taste, then I will bake as you’ve done here too.

  23. Love zucchini fries. We usually make them with a cornmeal/ww flour crust. But, breadcrumbs are a nice idea too. Will have to try that sometime.

  25. Great idea! Maybe I can get my boys to eat these. I do SO love french fries but can’t really enjoy them because I know how terrible they are for me. I could eat these guilt-free!

  26. We have been waiting for this recipe ever since you tweeted it a few weeks ago. We all knew josh would come around….baked is best!! They look delicious, must try ’em over here! xo

  27. I’ll definitely be back to this recipe! We always end up with more zucchini than we know what to do with at the end of summer. My husband will love these! If he’ll eat carrot fries, he’ll eat anything 🙂

  34. I love sweet potato fries and the girls do too, but I will have to try these this weekend for the girls. Any way to get the veggies in! Thanks Maria!

  35. I made these last night. My kids (ages 2 & 4) were my sous chefs and so we made our first batch with everything according to the recipe, but we used panko bread crumbs instead of whole wheat. For some reason we had still had half a bowl of zucchini left, but we ran out of the breading mixture. So we made a second batch of breading mix, except this time we used the whole wheat. Both of the batches were delicious! We also made your marinara sauce and had quite a bit left over, so that will turn into a lovely sauce for a homeade pizza!
Thanks for the delicious and healthy recipe. The huzzband and I ate the “fries” as dinner!

  36. I’ve been wanting to try to make something like this…will follow your recipe when I get some zucchini! They look great with the sauce to dip in!

  37. I have always love breaded fried zucchini and if I can have them just a tad healthier by baking them then more for me! Great recipe! And love the marinara sauce with them. Beautiful!

  38. Oh dear, I got behind in my reading. But I’m glad I didnt miss this recipe, They look delicious and I know my family would love them. Bookmarked and thumbs up!!!

  39. I love those fries. Been looking for a good baked zucchini fry recipe for a while now. My 14-year old claims to NOT like zucchini. Let’s see what he thinks of these. BTW, do you think a whole egg would work just as well? I don’t have the heart to toss out the yolk!

    1. Liz-I hope you like the fries. Yes, you can use a whole egg instead of the egg whites.

  40. I just love zucchini, and use it quite a lot, but never thought of making fries with it. And I love that you baked the fries for a healthier option. A must try.

  41. I love zucchini I will have to try this recipe this summer when my zucchini come up in my garden.

  42. Oh yes, this is something I’d definitely like. I would love to dip them in garlic sauce, I wonder how it would taste. This is a nice and easy recipe, I will try it for sure.

  43. I made these tonight. My 2 year old (and I) loved them! However, I didn’t think they were crispy enough after 20 minutes. I let them bake on one side for 20 minutes, flipped them and baked them for 15 more minutes and they were fantastic! And I agree with Tristan, I ran out of bread crumbs after 2 zucchinis and had to make more for the 3rd zucchini. I also needed 2 baking sheets to fit all the fries. The flavor balance was really great and I didn’t add any salt.

  44. I know I already mentioned it on Twitter, but I made these for dinner last night and we loved them! I put the breadcrumb mix into a baggie, added the zucchini after it had been dipped in egg and gave it a shake because I was short on time. It seemed to work pretty well! Can’t wait to make them again 🙂

  45. what a great idea! My boyfriend and I have started a healthy eating lifestyle and are ALWAYS looking for healthy but good tasting recipes.

He swears that eating healthy means eating bland, tasteless food. But I am on a mission to show him that’s not the case.

Will definitely make this recipe and see what happens.

  46. tried these tonight, so good, thanks for sharing!! My son even ate these, he thinks he doesn’t like zucchini so I called them green fries. He scarfed his right up without any complaint, and said he liked them!

  47. These look mouthwatering. I’ve been looking for a new, fun way to make vegetables and this is the perfect recipe!

  48. These are fantastic! I made them into round little “chips”, if you will, and my husband and I couldn’t get enough. Thanks for a healthy alternative to tempura…my standby zucchini recipe when zucchini bread has worn out its welcome 🙂

  49. I have made my zuchinni almost like this for years…Most of the time mine are cut into slices or circles, not the shape of frys.

We really like them this way. About the only thing I leave out is the oregano.

  50. These are delicious! I just made them and I’m munching on them with a little chipotle mayo. I still have some of the bread crumb mixture and zucchini left so I’ll make more tomorrow 🙂 The only thing I might try different next time is to use panko bread crumbs to make it a little bit crunchier. Unless I didn’t leave them in the oven long enough. I guess I’ll find out tomorrow. Thanks for the recipe 🙂

  51. These look so yummy! Perfect for a night in with the girls watching a movie!! I’m having a dinner night at mine soon and will definitely be giving these a spin. Great recipe!!

  52. Oh my… I made these tonight for dinner and they were amazing! In fact, I loved them so much I’ll be making them again tomorrow. Thank you so much for this superb recipe 😀

  53. I know I’m a little late to the party, but I just made these recently and they were delicious! My husband was skeptical like yours but was won over immediately. He has already requested them for next week. Thanks for sharing!

  54. These were delicious! I’ve just recently discovered your website and I’m a convert. You’ve got tons of great ideas- thanks! One question: dipping and dredging the zuke fries took forever (my 1 & 3 year olds were all over the place as I went one at time with the fries) until finally I just had to go faster and then the breadcrumb mixture didn’t coat as evenly or at all. Is there any faster way?

  55. These are delicious! I made them with dinner tonight and they were a big hit! So much better than regular french fries!!

  56. Just stumbled across your blog and made these fries tonight. Even my junk food addicted boyfriend loved them. Great recipe!

  57. Spent a large portion of the workday scouring your blog (guilty!) and I can’t believe I’ve just found it-you may be a genius!! Can’t wait to test more recipes!

  58. Thanks for the recipe! Just before taking them out of the oven I sprayed the fries with canola oil cooking spray which added a nice crisp. Keep the summer vegetable recipes coming please!!!

  59. Great recipe – mine turned out delicious! The Parmesan cheese made the breading just that right amount of salty. I just wish I’d cut my zucchini strips skinnier, since (being zucchini) the fries naturally got moist and mushy as they cooled.

  60. Here in the UK we have a chain of burger restaurants called Byron and they have ‘courgette fries’ on their menu. They look just like this but unfortunately they deep fry them. Great to find a recipe for a baked version and with the addition of some herbs too, I’ll be sure to try these soon!

  61. Just made these, they’re great! Just make surfe you put enough oil on the pan (not too much, not too little) to make sure the breading doesn’t stick to the pan!

  62. 4 stars
Made these tonight, along with another person’s recipe for zuc fries. This recipe was the better of the two. Four stars: I had to double all the spices, as we could barely taste any. But, once that was done, the zuc fries were tasty. I will make them again. Although tasty, we do not eat french fries, as they are not healthy.
