Chocolate Dipped OREO Cookies are a holiday staple. I have been making them since I was a little kid. I remember making a big mess in the kitchen with my brother and sister. My sister was the neat one and made her cookies look perfect, my brother would dip a few and then just start eating, and I would go crazy with ALL of the toppings. Mine weren’t the prettiest, but man were they tasty. We always had so much fun.

This year, I wanted to carry on our family tradition and make Chocolate Dipped OREO Cookies with Caleb and Maxwell. They love OREO cookies and when I told them we were going to dip them in chocolate, their eyes lit up. OREO cookies AND chocolate? A dream come true!

Chocolate Dipped Oreos Recipe

We went all out and dipped three kinds of Oreo cookies-regular, winter, and peppermint. We dipped the cookies in chocolate and white chocolate. I put out several toppings for decorating-sprinkles, crushed candy canes, chopped nuts, and coconut. Feel free to use whatever toppings you want! It’s fun to have a variety.

The boys were so excited and had a BLAST! OREO cookie eyes:)

Josh and I supervised, but we let them go to town. We knew it was going to get messy, but that was all part of the fun!

The boys did a great job, they are our little holiday helpers.

Of course, there was tasting along the way. You can’t put out cookies, chocolate, and sprinkles and expect the kids to stay perfectly clean and not have a taste. They had chocolate faces by the end. Shhh, I had to have a few tastes too:)

The winter OREO cookies are red on the inside and made a very pretty chocolate dipped cookie. Caleb’s favorite color is red so he bit into a few cookies until he found a red one:)

The holiday sprinkles made the outside of the cookies extra festive.

My favorite combo was the Peppermint OREO cookies dipped in white chocolate and sprinkled with crushed candy canes. Pure heaven!! I am hiding these ones from the boys:)

Ingredients

  • OREO cookies, we used regular, winter, and peppermint
  • Chocolate candy melts, we used milk and white chocolate
  • Sprinkles,  crushed candy canes, coconut, chopped nuts, or anything else you want to use to decorate!

Instructions

  • Place parchment paper or wax paper on a flat work surface.
  • In a medium microwave-safe bowl, melt the candy melts in 30 second increments, stirring between each heating. Heat until chocolate is smooth and there are no lumps.
  • Dip one cookie at a time into the chocolate, coating completely. Lift out cookie with a fork and shake gently side-to-side to remove excess chocolate. Lay cookie on parchment paper or wax paper. Decorate with sprinkles, candy canes, coconut, nuts, or whatever toppings you like. Repeat until all cookies have been dipped and decorated. If the chocolate starts to harden, place the bowl back in the microwave and heat for 10-15 seconds and stir again.
  • Let the cookies set until chocolate is hard. Remove from paper and place in an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  • Note-you can also use almond bark or baking chocolate, melt according to package instructions.

  1. I saw a fun take on these to insert a stick into the Oreo and add chocolate covered pretzels antlers and candy eyeballs and a cinnamon imperial nose to make little Rudolphs. You are so brave to make these with your boys! I bet they loved it!

  2. Maria. I add a Popsicle stick to my dipped Oreos.  Twist them apart and anchor the stick with a mix of powdered sugar, meringue powder and milk.  Replace wafer and let dry.  Easy dipping and easy eating.

  3. Seriously adorable photos!! Who wouldn’t love chocolate-covered Oreos?! I’m seriously loving the peppermint Oreo cookies!

  4. A Christmas time classic and I love your boys getting in on the action helping you make them 🙂 So cute!

  5. I did peanut butter Oreos covered with milk chocolate, regular Oreos covered with dark chocolate, and the peppermint Oreos with white chocolate. I just use chocolate chips melted in a double broiler. Peanut butter was the BEST!

  6. Hi! Thanks for the recipe. Was actually hoping you could give me some advice on what I might have done wrong….the milk chocolate on my Oreos dried with a almost white film (not shiny and smooth)….I don’t think I overheated the chocolate as it definitely didn’t seem burnt. I don’t know what I did wrong and although they still taste amazing they look awful. Please help!

    1. Try adding a teaspoon-tablespoon of vegetable oil in with the chocolate as you melt it. It should get much smoother and easier to dip.
