Why I love this Homemade Chocolate Cake

I like cakes that are easy to make and this homemade chocolate cake definitely fits the bill. This is the best chocolate bundt cake you will ever make and eat! Trust me!

  • There are no complicated steps and you don’t have to spend hours or days decorating.
  • You don’t need a mixer to make this bundt cake, you can whip it up by hand! I love my KitchenAid Mixer to pieces, but sometimes it’s nice to do it the old-fashioned way.
  • It’s so moist! This bundt cake recipe calls for sour cream, which makes the cake super moist. It is the secret ingredient!
  • If you don’t have sour cream, you can use plain Greek yogurt. It produces a lovely cake as well.
  • Use good quality cocoa for this bundt cake so you get a nice chocolate flavor.
  • The chocolate glaze is silky, smooth, and so divine. It would make anything taste good. Drizzling it on top of this amazing chocolate bundt cake really should be illegal. (I want to continue baking and eating this cake, so please don’t tell the police. I don’t want to go to jail. Let’s keep this our little secret:)
  • Make sure you grease your bundt pan really well. You don’t want it to get stuck. I like to use soft butter, make sure get into all of the details of the pan so nothing sticks!
  • Use high quality chocolate to make the chocolate glaze so the cake has the best flavor!
  • If you want to skip the chocolate glaze you can dust the cake with powdered sugar, but I really like the chocolate glaze. It is the perfect finishing touch to the bundt cake.

For the cake:

For the chocolate glaze:

  • Position a rack in the center of the oven and heat to 350 degrees F. Butter and flour a 10 or 12-cup Bundt pan and set aside.
  • In a small saucepan, combine the butter, cocoa powder, salt, and water and place over medium heat. Cook, stirring, just until melted and combined. Remove from the heat and set aside.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and baking soda. Add half of the melted butter mixture and whisk until completely blended. The mixture will be thick. Add the remaining butter mixture and whisk until combined. Add the eggs, one at a time, whisking until completely blended. Whisk in the sour cream (or Greek yogurt) and the vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth.
  • Scrape the batter into the prepared pan and bake until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean, 40 to 45 minutes. Let the cake cool in the pan for 15 minutes and then invert onto a rack. Let cool completely before glazing.
  • While the cake is cooling, make the chocolate glaze. Place the chopped chocolate and corn syrup (or agave) in a medium bowl and set aside. Combine the heavy cream and sugar in a small saucepan and put over medium heat. Stir until the cream is hot and the sugar is dissolved. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and whisk until smooth.
  • Generously drizzle the glaze over the cooled cake, allowing it to drip down the sides. Cut into pieces and serve.

  1. Help! I used hersheys cocoa in this recipe recipe instead of the Dutch processed ! The Hersheys says unsweetened. Will this work out?

  2. 5 stars
I made this and love it! I will be making it again.
The only changes that I made: sprayed the pan with Pam for Baking, used a mixer, cake was done in 40 minutes, used 1 tablespoon of maple syrup instead of the 1.5 tablespoons of corn syrup.

Can i add baking powder to this recipe to make it rise?
Am making this fir my sister’s birthday. It looks beautiful.

    2. I have made this recipe before, and it is delicious! I have a question. Can I convert this recipe to use as a three-layer cake instead of baking in the bundt pan? How would I do that??

  3. 5 stars
This was perfection! So easy and delicious. It baked in less than 40 mins, but that is typical for our oven 😉

  4. 5 stars
I love this recipe! I found it searching for chocolate Bundt cake and I’m thrilled. I used a Nordic ware pan with four small bundts and they came out fabulous! I didn’t even make the topping as I was practicing for Christmas basket baking – this cake will be in my baskets next week! It was wonderful without the topping can’t wait to taste it with the topping!

  5. 5 stars
Did a quick search for chocolate Bundt cake and found this recipe and it’s most certainly a keeper! So moist and the perfect chocolate flavor!!! I added a few chocolate chips for fun and they did not disappoint! Everyone make this recipe, it’s a must try!!

  6. I made this cake for part of my Christmas desserts. By far the best chocolate cake I’ve ever tasted!
I used the Pam (blue can) baking spray. It works perfect for baking cakes.
    I didn’t make the icing

  7. I’ve been looking for a good chocolate bundt cake recipe and based on the comments, I can’t wait to try this one!
I would like to bake them in mini bundt pans. Does anyone have any tips for that, rather than a full size bundt?

    1. I cut the recipe in half used a mini Bundt pan cooked it in my air fryer at 3:20 for 25 minutes it was perfect

  8. 5 stars
Fantastic! I used coffee instead of water, cut the sugar just a little and added chocolate chips. Next time I make it I am just going to dust it with powdered sugar.

  9. 5 stars
Oh my goodness made this cake using all the good stuff, real butter real sugar amazing cake so soft so moist so flavorful. Thank you for the recipe.
This is going into my recipe box

Baked this Chocolate Bundt on a whim. My batter looked somewhat wetter than your video, but I crossed my fingers and put it in the oven. Yes! As so many of your other reviews, I have to say, this is truly one of the best chocolate cake recipes I’ve ever made. And, the glaze is amazing. My husband was licking the bowl (which he never does)! Thank you. This will be my go-to chocolate cake recipe.

  11. 5 stars
Very yummy! I made some changes because I LOVE chocolate– instead of regular unsweetened cocoa powder I used Hersheys Special Dark Chocolate unsweetened cocoa powder. For water I made strong coffee and substituted. For the bundt pan I added some cocoa powder to the flour after buttering.
For the frosting I used 70% bittersweet Ghirardelli chocolate.
    Fabulous! And chocolaty!

    This cake was INCREDIBLE!
If anyone is wondering about Gluten Free, I used America’s Test Kitchen 1:1 Gluten Free Flour mix and added 1 tsp Guar Gum. As well, I didn’t have Dutch processed cocoa but my cake still turned out great. We used store chocolate frosting to make things easier and served it with chilled Cherry Pie filling. It was amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this easy, delicious recipe. It is going straight in my recipe book and will be my go-to Bundt Cake now, possibly even my go-to Chocolate Cake – it’s that good!

  13. I cannot tell you how many times I have made this delicious cake! Yum! Yesterday, my granddaughter requested it for her 18th birthday! It has definitely become a family favorite! Thank you!

  14. 5 stars
Delicious! I make a homemade chocolate buttercream frosting instead. This cake is great and everyone loves it and asks for the recipe!

  15. Your recipe says 1 cup of butter but the video shows four sticks of butter being used. Are those 2oz sticks? Curios

  16. 5 stars
Very easy to assemble. First time I followed recipe verbatim. Second time I reduced temp to 325 and extended bake time to 60 minutes. Both yielded fabulous results.

  17. My first ever attempt at a bundt cake and turned out great. Fyi I only put 1 cup of sugar in the cake and it was plenty sweet, with expected texture.

  18. I made this today and after I waited 15 minutes to invert onto to a cooling rack it would not release. After finally getting it out the top of the cake was stuck to the pan. I used a baking spray could of that been it ? The flavor was delicious though. I plan to remake it. Any tips ? I would greatly appreciate it.

    1. Same thing happened to me…I think more cooling time and more flour in the pan beforehand.

  19. 5 stars
I am obsessed with this cake! I used Kerrygold salted butter and added a bag of Ghirardelli dark chocolate chips. Next time I will try the coffee trick.

  20. 5 stars
This came out way more dense than I expected. The only thing I did differently was use a mixer instead of a whisk. Don’t get me wrong, it was still amazing and my co-workers absolutely inhaled it. But I’m wondering if I went wrong somewhere. Either way, will definitely still make again based on the amazing flavors!

I have made this recipe before, and it is delicious! I have a question. Can I convert this recipe to use as a three-layer cake instead of baking in the bundt pan? How would I do that??

  22. 5 stars
This has become my go-to chocolate cake recipe! I’ve made it as a Bundt cake, 2 layer cake, cupcakes, and it has always turned out DELICIOUS! Thank you for such a great recipe!

    1. 5 stars
I will say I did use one of the comments to make a slight adjustment to the recipe, instead of water, I use coffee to bring out the chocolate flavor more.

  23. I baked this cake today. Delicious. Only problem for me was that I sprayed my bundt pan with coconut oil and the cake stuck to the pan a bit. Will try it again using butter and dusting with flour. Other than that, the cake really was light, moist and perfect with cold glass of milk. Thank you.

  24. 5 stars
8/19/2023 – This was my second time making this Bundt cake and it came out exactly like the first time… PERFECT! Love this recipe. The only thing I do different is skip the glaze; we’re more of a whipped cream family.

  25. I made this as a bundt and it is seriously the best cake I have ever tasted. So thank you! Would this recipe, by chance, also work as cupcakes?

    1. I haven’t tried it, it might give it a hint of maple flavor, but if you like maple, go for it!

  26. I have made this countless times and everyone LOVES it!!!
I would like to make this with mini bundt (cupcake) pan. How long should I bake at 350 deg?

    1. I am not sure on the exact size of the pan so I can’t give you an exact time. Check early!

  27. 5 stars
I have a six cup Bundt pan so I cut the recipe in half. Didn’t have Dutch processed cocoa so I used unsweetened cocoa powder and this was outstanding! Very moist and delicious. Can’t wait to make it again. Thank you.

  28. 5 stars
Delicious! I didn’t make the glaze since I was planning to serve this cake with berries and whipped cream. It looked a little plain after unmolding, so I grated some (quite a bit, actually) bittersweet baking chocolate on top while the cake was still warm. The chocolate melted and turned into a shiny, crunchy crust after the cake cooled. Just what it needed for a perfect dessert!
