Our French Toast recipe is the very best, we make it all of the time, but sometimes we like to mix things up. This Crunchy French Toast recipe is a fun twist on the classic! You will love the crispy, crunchy cereal coating!

This French toast recipe is similar to traditional French toast, the bread still gets drenched in a rich, vanilla egg custard with plenty of cinnamon. BUT before cooking, we coat the bread in cereal. Then, we cook the French toast in a little butter on both sides and end up with a fun and delicious breakfast!

The French toast is soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside, the best of both worlds. Serve warm with your favorite toppings like maple syrup, whipped cream, and berries, and enjoy every single bite. Kids and adults love this French toast recipe! It’s the perfect breakfast for weekends, holidays, or any special occasion!

Key Ingredients

The ingredients are basic, making this an EASY recipe to whip up any morning!

  • Eggs– use large eggs.
  • Milk- we use whole milk to create a rich batter, but you can use your favorite milk.
  • Vanilla extract– to give the batter flavor.
  • Cinnamon– a MUST for French toast!
  • Pinch of salt– to balance out the sweetness.
  • Cornflakes– cereal is the special ingredient for making the crunchy coating. We use cornflakes, but crispy rice cereal will also work.
  • Bread– I recommend using thick slices of Brioche or Challah bread.
  • Butter– cook the French toast in melted butter. YUM!

How to Make Crunchy French Toast

  • We like to cook the French toast on an electric griddle. If you are going to use one, make sure you preheat the griddle so it is hot and ready to go!
  • In a shallow pan or pie plate, add the eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. Whisk until well combined.
  • Place the cornflakes in a large bowl and crush with your hands until the pieces are small, but not completely crushed into crumbs, and somewhat uniform in size. If you are using crispy rice cereal, you don’t need to crush them, they are small enough.
  • Dip each side of the bread in the egg mixture. Dip the slice into the cornflakes on both sides, pressing to adhere the flakes; set aside on a baking sheet or platter. Repeat with the remaining slices.
  • Melt a little butter on the hot griddle. You can also cook the French toast in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the French toast until golden brown, about 3 to 4 minutes on each side.
  • To keep the French toast warm, place a wire rack on a large baking sheet and place the French toast on the rack. Keep warm in a 200 degree F oven for up to 30 minutes. This is helpful if you are serving a crowd.
