I got hit with a nasty flu bug on Saturday. I spent most of the weekend in bed. My diet consisted of ice chips and Gatorade, not fun. I am feeling a little better today, but will probably lay low and try to get my strength back. I had to get up early to write this blog post, I didn’t want you all to miss out on these orange ricotta cookies with dark chocolate. They need to be added to your Christmas cookie list today!

Chocolate and orange always reminds me of Christmas-probably because of the big chocolate orange candy we get in our stocking every year. Love those! These orange ricotta cookies are soft and cakey. After they cool, you spread each cookie with an orange glaze and drizzle them with dark chocolate. If you like orange and dark chocolate together, I have a feeling you will love these cookies. These cookies remind me of that big chocolate orange candy and that is a good thing!

If you still have time for one more Christmas cookie this year, I highly suggest you make these orange ricotta cookies with dark chocolate. I know we will be making them every year from now on.

Instructions

  • 1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Set aside.
  • 2. In a medium bowl combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Whisk until ingredients are combined. Set aside.
  • 3. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine butter and the sugar. Beat the until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add the eggs, one at a time, until incorporated. Add the ricotta cheese, orange juice, and orange zest. Beat to combine.
  • 4. Stir in the dry ingredients. Spoon the dough (about 1 tablespoon for each cookie) onto the baking sheets. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until slightly golden at the edges. Remove from the oven and let the cookies rest on the baking sheet for 2 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and cool completely.
  • 5. To glaze the cookies: combine the powdered sugar and orange juice in a small bowl and whisk until smooth. Spoon about 1/2-teaspoon onto each cookie and use the back of the spoon to gently spread. Let glaze harden for about five minutes. Drizzle cookies with dark chocolate and let the cookies set up.

I would just make them plain, but this gives them a yummy addition.

    Hope you feel better soon.

  17. yum! i am thinking of making these, although i currently have a surplus of meyer lemons so i might replace the orange with lemon. and maybe dark chocolate with white chocolate, i’m not sure. i, too, love the chocolate oranges and thought you might like to know that i spotted them in Target the other day in a chocolate mint variety (with no orange flavor). also sounds delicious!

  18. Chocolate and orange are a wonderful combination, and your cookies are beautiful. Wondering if low-fat ricotta can be used. Hope you feel better!

  19. I baked up these cookies last night, and my husband and I love them! They are very soft and cake-like. I think I needed to bake them the full 15 minutes, because they were a little on the doughy side, but still very good. And they do taste just like a chocolate orange! Thanks for the recipe!

  20. These cookies look better than amazing. I also like that they are very different. You are right. These need to be on my cookie baking list for this weekend. Thanks & Happy Holidays!

  21. Just curious about the chocolate. Did you use a dark baking chocolate or dark chocolate in bar form like Hersheys? I’m so eager to try this recipe. Thanks!

  22. My cookie list is full but I will make time to make these when christmas is over. They really look delicious! Would you recommend I put some orange coloring in it to make it look like its really orange?

  23. I made these yesterday and mine also came out flat. A little disappointing but still delicious. My butter was not melted so next time I will try a little more flour.

    1. Sorry the cookies melted. Yes, add more flour next time. You could also try chilling the dough before baking. I didn’t have a problem. Hmmm….

    2. Did they all come out flat? I ask because the first couple of batches I made tonight weren’t flat but I think the longer the dough was sitting out the more flat they became. Maybe put half the dough in the fridge while working with the other half. That’s what I’m going to try next time.

  24. Hope you are finally over your bug! Around here it seems it is hitting everyone twice. Dark chocolate and orange is such a great combination. These look lovely!

  25. I made these for Christmas and they were a huge hit! Even my boyfriend, who claims he doesn’t like cookies (ridiculous, I know), ate about a dozen of them! They are so delicious! Thanks for the recipe!

  26. I made these for a party yesterday, and they were a huge hit! So moist and delicious. I was lazy, so I just chopped up one of those chocolate oranges and melted it for the chocolate drizzle (and skipped the glaze entirely).

  27. Just googled orange chocolate cookies and these came up….researching for a holiday cookie exchange. Yes, I’m a freak like that. 🙂 I think these are the ones…..won’t pinterest them as I don’t want my friends to see. Yes, I am THAT bad!!!
    Thanks!!!

  28. Just made these with my mom tonight..loved them! We doubled the batch so she can take them to a cookie swap tomorrow and I’m sure they’ll be a big hit..thanks for posting!

  29. How do you really put them on the sheet that they come out so round and uniform? does “drop by tablespoon” really do that? or do you have to chill and roll them a bit to form more like a ball before you bake them?

  30. I made these for a cookie exchange this Christmas, which is still 2 days off. How should I store these cookies…in the fridge or in a tight container on the counter? Thanks for your help and the recipe.

    1. Storing them on the counter in an air tight container should be just fine. Have fun at your exchange!

  31. I made these today and got raves from my Mom and son. These will become a holiday “must bake” treat.

  32. I want to make these cookies for a holiday party and to give to people. Some of the cookies will be eaten close to 2 weeks after I make them. How would you recommend I store them? Thanks!!

  33. I would love to make these ASAP! The sound yummy!
My question is about storage, can I freeze these? Or how long do you suggest storing them at room temp and/or freezing?
    Thank You

    1. You can freeze them before you ice them. Let them defrost and then you can add the icing. Enjoy!

  34. These cookies look and sound amazing, and its already on my christmas baking list. However, I would like to just check…what is the shelf life of these cookies? Can these be made upto a week ahead and stored in containers? The citrus element makes me wanna keep off the baking until the last minute…would really appreciate your reply.

  35. My daughter and I made these cookies. Delicious! I wasn’t able to drizzle the chocolate on, so I used a plastic bag to pipe it on.

    1. You can freeze the cookies. I would freeze them before adding the glaze or chocolate. Defrost and then add those when ready!

  36. Hi I would love to make these, however I am confused… your cookie recipie calls for 3 tbsp fresh orange zest and 1 orange zested. The confusion comes into play when you put the ingredients together and it calls for the zest and orange juice?!?!?! please explain?

    1. Right, you need to add the orange juice and the orange zest to the dough. Mix it all together! I always zest the orange first and then juice what I need for the recipe. Does this help?

  37. Do you store these in the fridge or just on the counter top? How long will they keep in an airtight container? I am making these to contribute to a cookie table at a wedding, so I am wondering how far in advance I can make them.

    1. You can store them on the counter or in the fridge. If you are making them in advance, I would store in the fridge, especially since it is hot! I would make them 2-3 days in advance and they should be just fine! Let them come to room temperature before serving.

  38. Hi Maria,
Love these cookies! I have been making them for a few years now….. Thank you you for the recipe!
Can they be frozen for about a week????

  39. 5 stars
We love these cookies, have made them for 2 years  now to only raves! Feels like an Italian cookie to me with the orange and chocolate and so pretty too!
