Poppy Chow
Updated October 28, 2015
“Poppy chow” is my latest sugary obsession. It is similar to the popular cereal snack “puppy chow,” but made with popcorn instead of Chex cereal. Popcorn is generously covered in chocolate, peanut butter, and then drenched with powdered sugar. When I saw ZoeDawn’s recipe on Tasty Kitchen, I told myself I wasn’t going to make it, even though I really wanted to. I was afraid of becoming addicted. Well, I couldn’t get the poppy chow recipe out of my mind so I caved in and made a batch, indulged, and loved every bite. This chocolate peanut butter popcorn is heavenly!
For the recipe, check out my guest post on Tasty Kitchen. I am warning you, poppy chow is addicting! I am going to make a big batch to give away to friends for the holidays. It is simple to make and everyone will love it. And hopefully, it will make it out the door:)
owww. I love puppy chow so I’m sure I’d be obsessed with this! I like the holidays because people usually have some of these type of treats at their parties that I can enjoy without having an entire container at home 😉
Yum! I make this recipe too, but with crispix cereal. This would be an amazing variation too. Great idea!
yum! i actually had never even heard of it until i started college, but now i love it! i use chex cereal to make it, but popcorn sounds even better 🙂
Ever since I saw this on TK I have been thinking about it… I am DEFINITELY going to try! You rock!
Interesting!! I have never made even thought about doing it with popcorn, very interesting!!
Gahhhh! I saw this on TK and after seeing it for the second time, I think it’s definitely calling my name. So many good memories of this stuff…I had completely forgotten about it till now!
Yum! Popcorn is more nutritious than Chex, so this is healthy. 😉 And I love that it’s ‘pOppy’ chow, cute 🙂
I have been seeing this everywhere lately – I must try it! It looks so yummy. I’ve got to go check out the recipe now! Thanks for sharing!
Chocolate-covered popcorn is one of my favorite things from a local chocolate company. Throw in peanut butter and powdered sugar?! Holy crap I’ll be on a sugar high from now till New Year’s. I can’t wait! 🙂
This is awesome! What a perfect treat to take along to Christmas parties (only so I won’t eat it all at home by myself)!
This sounds so good! I love popcorn, and popcorn dressed as puppy chow? Perfect!
this looks fun. will have to try with the kids!
You always have the best ideas Maria!
yep – chocolate, peanut butter and popcorn rank right up there!
What a great recipe – my mouth is watering!
okay, now I’m afraid to give it a try-I know I will polish off the batch!
sweet & salty, yum!
Maria, this sweet treat sure does look VERY addictive indeed! XO
I am a HUGE fan of puppy chow and I’m SURE I would love this as well. The kind of snack you can’t keep your hands off of!
I love that treat!
Cheers,
Rosa
My grandma used to make this for me when I’d come visit. It’s totally addicting!
Cute idea!
I have never hear dof this. I must admit it took me off guard as yes, I thought it said puppy chow
What a cute idea to use popcorn instead of chex!
Looks amazing Maria! My hubby would go crazy for it too.
LOVE this idea!!! I have always made mine with Chex but popcorn is brilliant!!
What a darling, fun addition to family movie night! LOVE it! Thank you Maria!
This is a must make for me Maria! It sounds so decadent and delicious – can’t beat the peanut butter and chocolate combo 🙂
This looks dangerous!
Nice! I might like it better than the regular version.

Any time there’s popcorn involved, I’m in. Love this new take on that old favorite recipe.
I can see how this would be addicting. What a great idea!
This has the potential of being so addictive! The green background is stunning in your photo.
What a great idea! I bet my boys will love making this. And love eating it too!
Wow, I am in heaven just looking at this!! xoxo
What a great munching snack for the Holidays!
We love puppy chow here! I was thinking of making some caramel popcorn for Christmas gifts but maybe I’ll have to try the poppy chow. It looks and sounds delicious!
For the first time in ages I bought some popping corn and trotted out my stovetop popper. Now I’m thinking I have to be more creative. I’d probalby eat an entire bowl of this before anyone else could touch it. I’ve never had puppy chow or poppy chow, but I suspect I’d probably love it.
when i saw this on tasty kitchen, i thought it was so clever and so aptly-named. looks great, maria.
I grew up on this stuff. It is addicting!!! I crave it around this time of year… or maybe i just crave all sweets this time of year 😉
Oh boy…reminds me of a snack my college roommate used to make back in the day. Was probably the #2 reason behind why i packed on a few pounds. Totally addictive
OMG, I haven’t had puppy chow in years! I could eat a mountain of this stuff! I love it!
I’m so glad you posted this! I love this stuff and have never made it. It’s dangerous to have this recipe. It’s too easy to make… and WAY to easy to eat. Thanks for the recipe!
I’m afraid I’m not going to be able to resist making poppy chow too! It looks too good not to make!
K, so last time I made “puppy” chow (although I refuse to call it that because I don’t like imagining I’m eating dog food!) I told my husband that I bet it would be good on popcorn too. I can’t wait to try it now- yours looks so good!
I am hopeless around puppy chow…I imagine this would be the same! YUM!
This would be so dangerous for me – I have no will power and I think I’d eat the whole bowl!
oh my goodness, I would be so addicted to this!!!
Poppy Chow! too cute really.
This looks too, too good. I can’t wait to try.
I’m addicted to the “puppy” chow version of this with Chex. This could be a seriously dangerous recipe 🙂
I made this over the weekend as a test run for teacher’s gifts. It was a HUGE hit! My son renames it “Choco Pop”. I am going to try a butterscotch version as well and then mix the two for gifts. Should be great. One quick question: my popcorn was really chewy. I have heard seeds can go bad and was wondering if my seeds were bad. Was your popcorn chewy as well?
Hi Jana-I love the name and butterscotch sounds really good too! The popcorn is a little chewy-it almost melts in your mouth!
I made a TON of this and my popcorn was chewy as well. I really enjoyed the flavor but the chewy popcorn, not so much. I would love to learn how to keep the popcorn crunchy! Any advice? Thanks!
Maybe try using a little less chocolate and peanut butter so it isn’t so drenched and doesn’t get soggy. Mine was a little soft but not really chewy.
I tried to leave a comment on the tasty kitchen post, but it’s not working right now…Anyway, this was amazing. My sister is a devoted puppy chowoholic so it will be interesting to see how she’ll take me making it with popcorn:)
I want to make this for Christmas gifts. How long in advance do you think I could make it?
Thanks so much
So glad you like the Poppy Chow. It is sooo tasty:) I think you could make it 2-3 days in advance and be fine. Just keep it in an air tight container or in bags. Thanks!
There is a real trick to making successful puppy chow – or in this case, Poppy Chow. A lot of times puppy chow doesn’t taste that great (yes, I said it). But you clearly have it down; this looks delicious!
Thanks for this awesome recipe! I have made it quite a few times since finding it (My version is peanut and caesin free)…most recently last night, where my son and I made a batch for a school snack. Seeing we are in Wisconsin, we renamed it “Bear Crumbs, what was left of the Bears after the game with the Packers.” I suspect this classmates are going to love it! Thanks!!
One of my favorite snacks too!
I was shocked to see this! I anticipated this to be something completely different (poppy chow made me think of my grandfather, I thought it might be something chewy with caramel or something) but I NEVER in my wildest dreams would think of making puppy chow with popcorn. I LOVE the idea!!!
So yummy! In the northeast, it’s called “Muddy Buddies.” 🙂
I just found this page for the poppy chow, it sounds yummy! When I try to go to the page you posted on, it’s not there. Can I find the recipe somewhere else?
Thanks for your help!
I updated the link. It should work now. Sorry about that!
