Apple Cinnamon Bread Recipe

I love all kinds of apples, but Josh only likes Granny Smith. I try to encourage him to eat an apple a day, but sometimes he forgets and eats donuts instead:) I always try to keep Granny Smith apples on hand, just in case he gets an apple craving. The donuts have been winning lately, so I decided to make a loaf of apple cinnamon bread with our abundance of apples.

Apple Cinnamon Quick Bread Recipe

I love using Granny Smith apples for baking because they are tart and crisp. I chopped up two apples and folded them into the cinnamon spiced bread batter. I topped the bread with a cinnamon sugar crust and let our new oven do the rest of the work. Our house quickly filled with a heavenly cinnamon aroma, it didn’t take Josh long to wander into the kitchen to see what was baking. He wanted to eat his apples now:)

This quick bread is the perfect treat to make during the fall months when apples are at their peak. Each slice of bread is filled with chunks of fresh apples. Enjoy a slice for breakfast or as a snack. And you might want to consider doubling the recipe because our one loaf didn’t last long:)

Ingredients

For the Bread:

Topping:

  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray an 8 by 4 loaf pan with cooking spray and set aside.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, all spice, and cloves. Set aside.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer, add the eggs and beat on medium speed for about 30 seconds. Add in oil, applesauce, and vanilla and mix until smooth. Next, add the sugar and mix until well combined.
  • Slowly add in the flour mixture and mix until flour is barely combined. Gently fold in the apple chunks. Pour batter into prepared loaf pan.
  • In a small bowl, mix together brown sugar, sugar, and cinnamon. Sprinkle over the batter in the loaf pan. Bake for 50-55 minutes, or until loaf is golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Cool bread in pan for 10 minutes. Loosen sides and remove from pan. Cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.

  8. Great recipe Maria!! I’m going to make a loaf as a thank you gift for myneighbors who brought me a bunch of apples the other day in addition to the ones that I already had come off my tree. We usually grate our apples because one of my picky children doesn’t like the big apple chunks.

  9. Growing up in Washington state, I ate an apple every single day of my childhood. I shudder to think now that those were all red delicious! I’m sure the Granny Smith apples are perfect for this beautiful bread – they are my baking apple choice too. Has he tried Pink Ladies or Honeycrisp? They are both so sweet but super crisp like the Grannys.

  10. Some times I forget and eat donuts too. The bread sounds like a fabulous alternative. Thanks for the link to my snickerdoodle bread.

  11. My brother is the same about granny smith apples- the only he likes to eat. GREAT bread, love the topping!!! I made apple cinnamon muffins this week but almost made bread!

  12. Ah, so you combine apples and doughnuts! Brilliant! I have a very similar recipe, and you’re right — it’s delicious!

  13. Wow, I love those big chunks of apples! I did a Streusel Apple Cinnamon Muffin a few weeks ago that has a similar texture to this, but this bread looks even more delicious! Thanks for sharing, Maria and Josh!

  14. I might forget about real apples if there were donuts around. But I could never forget about this bread. Looks delicious.

    1. It was fun meeting Angie. Are you coming to UT for the holidays? If so, you have to come see our new kitchen. Maybe we can even bake together:) I hope all is well!

  15. I made 2 batches of this today. It made 4 smaller loaves. My family loved it. After I had it baked I realized I had not put the cinnamon sugar layer on top but it was still delicious. My husband suggested that he would enjoy some butterscotch chips in next time. I might try that and reduce the sugar some. Thanks for all the good recipes you share.

  16. Oh my! I ma so making this for my oldest monkey. He hates bananas so he won’t touch banana bread. Simply gorgeous!!!

  17. Ooo this bread looks DELICIOUS! I love the addition of all those huge apple chunks! This is the perfect time for some apple cinnamon bread, I can already smell the scent of it baking in the oven.

  18. Awesome! My next bread to make is an apple cinnamon bread and yours looks way better than many that I’ve seen! I’m super impressed and would LOVE a piece of this : )

  19. Looks yummy and definitely apple-y. I’m so with you on the Granny Smiths. I really find that while there are many good eating apples to be had out there, nothing beats Granny Smiths for baking. They don’t juice up too much and hold their texture nicely.

I’m LMAO at your comment about the doughnuts!

  20. Not a huge fan of apples too, the only apples I like are Jazz apples. But I love them in baked goods though, this looks great!

  21. This bread looks incredible! I love all the chunks of apples and the cinnamon sugar topping!

  22. I am all for a daily donut but I think a slice of this bread would be much tastier and healthier in the long run! The sugary top looks delicious.

  23. yummm. my apple flax pecan bread was a bit of a flop that i made last weekend. maybe i shall try this next!

  24. I really enjoy your blog – we’ve tried a number of your recipes and this apple cinnamon bread was a HUGE hit with my 2-year old twins yesterday! Thank you so much for sharing! I’ve posted a link on my blog to this recipe – hope others will find you and your great eats!

  25. I tried this recipe last night and it was AMAZING! My house smelled so good and its was awesome hot out of the oven and tasty this morning for breakfast. Thanks for a great recipe!!

  26. My boyfriend absolutely adores Granny Smiths and when we went apple picking he ate more of them than I could count! I can’t wait to make this.

  27. I love quick breads and this one sounds really good! I love the chunks of apple in it and that there’s half applesauce and half oil.

  28. Love the looks of this, and I especially like that it doesn’t have too much oil. Can’t wait to try it! I bet it would also be good with a handful of dried or fresh cranberries. What do you think?

    1. Dried cranberries would be a very nice addition to this bread. I will have to add them next time!

  29. Oh, this would go so well with a cup of black tea. I love apple pies and I am sure this would be a hit with me and my fam. Thanks.

  30. I was wondering why the sugar is added to the wet ingredients instead of to the dry before combining? Does it make a difference?

  31. Wow, your apple cinnamon bread looks really delicious. I’ve never had bread with egg in it, like you have here, and this makes me interested and have to try it, and hopefully I’ll get the same result like you have, thanks for having the recipe here 🙂

  32. I know I’m late to the party, but when I try a recipe and love it I want to give kudos to the person who put it out there 🙂
This was so yummy, and even if it ended up tasting like tires (which it did NOT) it was worth making for the heavenly smell alone while baking! I wish I had used Grannies, though. I had some weird apples that taste fantastic fresh and cold cut up but turned bland when baked. Thanks for all these great recipes Maria!

  33. This was delicious. Probably one of the easiest and most delicious baking recipes I’ve ever tried. I can’t wait to have it tomorrow with my morning coffee. My husband has already eaten three pieces! I think I’ll be making this on at least a bi-weekly basis. Yum, yum, yum!!!

  34. I made this bread last night (with honeycrisp apples, because that’s what I had on hand) and it is AMAZING! I brought it in to work and it was literally gone by 9:15am and people were coming past my office like crazy asking for the recipe. This one is a definite keeper!

  35. I just made this after a bad day. It was the perfect pick-me-up. 🙂 I switched out the cinnamon sugar topping with fresh vt maple syrup. It was fantastic. 🙂 I cant wait to try more of your stuff.

  36. I made this and it was deelsih………However I forgot I broke my loafpan so used muffin tins instead……..just had to bake them a shorter time.

Either way……..its a delite to your palate!

  37. WOW. This bread is incredible. I went apple picking this past weekend and was looking for a recipe to use up some of my apples, and this was a real winner! I used half brown sugar and half granulated sugar, and used my food processor to shred the honey crisp apples. It was delicious! The loaf didn’t last a day in the house 🙂 Thank you very much for always posting such incredible recipes. I blogged about the bread (and your awesome site) here: http://www.paulasplate.net/2012/09/apple-cinnamon-bread.html

  38. This bread is delicious!

I’ve enjoyed several recipes from your blog, and just wanted to stop by and show my appreciation. Thanks!

  39. I tried out this bread back in February when we had a snow storm and we were stuck in the house for the day. It was absolutely delicious and made for a nice warm pick-me-up on a cold winter’s day.
I’m just wondering though, is the egg absolutely necessary? Could you replace the egg with maybe more oil and apple sauce? I’m attending a vegan thanksgiving pot-luck next weekend and I’m thinking this would be quite the hit if it just didn’t have the egg!

  40. With Sandy the storm on the way I decided to make this recipe. Eating the raw mixture off the spoon was wonderful but once cooked this apple bread is to die for.

I gave a loaf to my friends next door and I unusually wait until they have eaten a slice to see what they think. All I could say as I handed it over was … the bread is awesome.

    Loved it!!!!!

  41. Made your recipe yesterday after I found some random apples in my fridge. Departing from my usual go to recipe, I tried yours because I had just the right amount of ingredients. I must say, this is delicious and I will make it again. My only challenge was removing the cake from the pan without spilling the crumb topping. Still a winner though!

  42. The most wonderful bread I’ve baked in a long time. On Saturday I’ll serve it straight from the oven together with oldfashioned vanilla ice cream. Thank you!

  43. I just took this out of the oven and if it tastes as good as the house smells our overnight company will never leave!

  44. Made this yesterday and I will be making this again. I was a little worried as I used a 9×5 loaf pan. The bread was excellent. Just the way I like it. A little crispy on the outside yet most and tender on the inside. Thank you for a great receipe!

this was very moist and most everyone loved it however in my opinion it has way to much sugar in it. i am wondering if i could just cut the sugar in half but leave everything else the same . i also usd egg beaters instead of reg eggs to cut down fat and cholesterol. i used olives oil also

I have been making this bread for years and it’s always delicious!!  My kids love it, it’s a hit at any gathering, and recently I have been sending it to school for a Kindergarten class snack!  So So Good!!!

My son and I made this bread together last night and it tasted amazing! We did a couple substitutions for our own personal preferences and it came out tasting so yummy. We only had gala apples on hand, so we used those; coconut oil for the canola oil, decreased the sugar by a quarter cup and used a homemade gluten free flour blend instead of the AP flour. Such a great recipe that I will now back for my son’s teachers this fall. Thank you!!

Well, I decided to place it in a small square pan. I decreased the
sugar to 3/4 cup. It is absolutely
delicious and came out as a afternoon treat cake.
