Creamy Avocado Pasta

We had a few ripe avocados leftover after making our Guacamole Grilled Cheese Sandwiches and I didn’t want them to go to waste, so I made one of our favorite pasta dishes-Creamy Avocado Pasta. It may not be the prettiest pasta dish, but it might be the tastiest. Trust me on this one. If you are an avocado lover, you will go crazy for this pasta.

You can have this delicious pasta dish on your table in 15 minutes. All you have to do is cook your pasta (we use whole wheat spaghetti, but any pasta will work) and make the simple sauce.  To make the sauce you combine avocado, garlic, fresh lime juice, cilantro, salt, and pepper in a food processor or blender and process until smooth. Mix the sauce with the hot pasta and you are good to go. I told you it was easy. The pasta is rich, thick, and creamy. I love that there is no butter or cream involved. The avocados create a smooth and creamy sauce without any help. This recipe is vegetarian, vegan, and can be gluten-free-if you use gluten-free pasta.

I could eat this pasta dish every night of the week. It is one of our “go to” meals when we are rushed, but still craving good home cooking. If you are looking for an easy healthy recipe that will wow your tastebuds, make this Creamy Avocado Pasta.

  22. YUM, avocado lime sauce is one of my favorites over pasta. I could eat pasta every day. Today I actually made a chunky avocado sauce and couldn’t believe how good it was, the jalapenos topped it off nicely. Hope I got a good shot of it, as I was so hungry, I could hardly wait to eat it 🙂 A friend gave us 10 avocados, so they are all ripe and ready for more recipes….i love avocados.

  27. I made this last summer for my pre 20mile run pasta dinner…and it was the best. Thing. Ever. That was probably the best 20 miler of my LIFE.

  28. I’ve never thought of adding avocado to pasta, but it totally makes sense! It’s healthier than cream sauce and gobbs of cheese.

  29. Mmmmmm…I’ve been picking up some extremely good avocados lately. This looks so creamy delicious – and perfectly quick and easy!

  30. this looks great! i love avocados and have some quinoa noodles sitting in my pantry right now. this might have to go on the rotation sooner as opposed to later.

  31. I love this, I just saw a similar recipe this week and had never thought of it before but I will be trying it soon, thanks for the recipe 🙂

  32. I never thought of this as a possibility. Stunning idea. I think I might do an avocado with whole wheat pasta this week.

  33. This will be a must in my recipe book. Since I was forbidden to eat dairy products I have a lot of things that I cann’t eat, one of them is our peruvian pesto, it’s a pesto but with fresh cheese and milk., and it’s one of my favorites, and I can’t have it.
But this one, made with avocado, in addition to have no dairy should be a light version of a pasta.

  34. Cool! I just made green pasta yesterday too! I love avocado and have never thought to put it with pasta- but I bet it’s delicious!

  35. this was AMAZING! i was a little worried my kids wouldn’t like it because they ‘claim’ to not like avocados. so i didn’t tell them what was in it until they were ‘ooing’ and ‘awing’ at the table. my 5 year old said, “mom, i guess i do like avocados sometimes’. thank you so much for posting this recipe. i am a total fan now! thank you, thank you!

  36. You’re in a avocado zone…and I love it! What a great idea to prepare pasta with avocado. Can’t wait to try it!

  37. Yes, I’ve got to get this on the regular roster in our house. I love everything in here and I also love how easy and quick it is. We were at Costco today and I passed up buying a large bag of avocados and am now kicking myself.

  38. Yum! In your professional opinion, do you think this would still be good if I put in a thermos for my kids lunch? Do you think the avocado would turn brown?

  39. I just love this recipe…always looking for meatless recipes and we just can’t get enough of avocados. I love that it also has lime and ciltantro – yum!

  40. I made this the other night for dinner. It was quick, easy, and delicious! My husband thought it was a pesto sauce when he looked at his plate – haha! He liked it better with some parmesan cheese sprinkled on top but I liked it just the way it was. I had such a light refreshing flavor. Thanks so much for another great recipe! I will definitely make this again.

  41. We tried your recipe last week and it was AWESOME! A huge hit for our whole family and my six year old who normally eats like a mouse gobbled it up. Then, she grabbed the bowl for seconds. Thank you especially for helping me find something my girls love!

  42. This was sooo good!!! I made a huge batch… defiantly recommend a food processor as my blender couldn’t make this so I had to hand cream! But I made enough to have extra for work the next day thinking my husband wouldn’t like it.. When I woke up he had eaten both containers when he got home from his shift!!! Can’t wait to make again!

  43. Tried this recipe last night. Great use of avocados. I did find, however, that my blender didn’t do that smooth, creamy like it should have. Ended up adding some extra virgin olive oil and water from the pasta boil to make it blend up.

  44. So I know this comment is late BUT I showed this recipe to my husband and he said no, so I decided to make a batch for myself and regular sauce for him. Right about when I was done making this creamy avocado sauce, my husband starts sniffing around so I let him take a bight. Turns out I had to make a couple more batches and he ate the whole thing up!! We loved it!

And my husband learned his lesson to always trust me and the peas.
We’ll make this plenty more times.

  45. I loved this recipe! I also added oregano, basil and parsley to the sauce while it processed. I wanted more substance to the dish-so I separately sauteed spinach, mushrooms, and shallots and combined with the pasta and sauce. The results were delicious-it will be on my table again!

  46. WOW!!! Just finished dinner and had to come leave a comment-

    Absolutely delicious!!!
This is going into our rotation….at the TOP of the list.
    We loved it.

    Thanks so much-
    Carolyn

  47. My kids love cream sauces (and everything else unhealthy in the world)! I wonder if I can trick them into eating this. Oh, maybe St. Patrick’s Day. “Hey kids, we’re having green pasta!”

  48. I am featuring this recipe & a few others on my blog today. I made it for my husband last week & he loooved the dish, thanks for the recipe 🙂

  49. Since my husband and I are not vegetarian we sometimes add bacon to this to give a bit of a kick. Then the next day, since this doesn’t reheat well, I’ll add a touch of EVOO, maybe even a dab of mayo depending on how dry it is and mix it all together for a great cold pasta salad. Oh we usually use campanelle pasta instead of spaghetti type noodles as well.

  50. I just made this for lunch and it is soo yummy! I roasted some grape tomatoes and threw those on top for some extra flavor & veggies. Really great texture and really filling too! Thank you!

  51. Could someone please tell me the trick to making this sauce? I have a blend-tec blender and was surprised that it really didn’t blend into a cream or sauce. It just spit avocado chunks to the walls of the blender. Had to add liquid to thin out…still didn’t really blend. Ended up removing from blender and mixing by hand. Loved the taste though. What did I do wrong?

    1. We haven’t had a problem with it mixing. It comes right together and is very creamy. Sorry you had issues!

  52. This recipe was pretty good, but next time I make it I’ll use a lot less cilantro. It’s very filling, and I didn’t even use whole wheat pasta. Avocados are on sale at my favorite store this week too. Score!

  53. We had this for dinner tonite, a little tweaked – added fresh basil and parsley from the garden. It was OUTstanding! So delicious and (ful)filling, without being heavy. I also used fresh pasta and it just absorbed all the deliciousness right up. Thanks for posting this 🙂

  54. I’m in heaven! This is my new favorite Gluten Free dish and I’m especially excited for this summer. Made this as written except used flat leaf parlsey . I also added a little olive oil and avocado oil in the blender to help it along and it made a really creamy sauce. Used Gluten free pasta and stored the leftovers in the fridge with the avocado pit and it stayed that beautiful green till the next day. My husband and I are already planning a super summer dinner of this pasta, lobster tails, a white chilled wine and melon for dessert. Oh my goodness, I can’t wait.

  55. Made it and eating it right now. Yum! Great texture and flavour and healthy to boot! I’m now addicted to avocados…

  56. So yummy and made my belly delightfully happy that I may have to make it again within a 24 hour time period!

  57. Do you know of any substitutes for Cilantro? I wish I liked it, but I’m one of those people that thinks it tastes like soap. lol I just have a feeling that without some type of herb it might be not as good?

  58. I’m allergic to dairy; so, I can’t generally eat great-tasting, creamy pasta dishes. But, this was phenomenal. The recipe and result is so amazing that I posted it on my Twitter feed for other non-dairy eaters. Thank you. While I made two substitutions with what I had around the house (lemon preserve juice, parsley), I can’t wait to try it again with lime and cilantro. I imagine it will be even better.

  59. This recipe surprised me. It looked so simple and creamy. But when I started blending the avocado, I couldn’t over the guacamole smell and was worried about eating guacamole pasta. The sauce was really thick, so I ended up adding some olive oil (a tablespoon or two) just to make it thinner and more spreadable. Even still, it required a lot of tossing to coat the noodles evenly. I think next time I’ll add a little more olive oil to make serving easier.

The taste, though, was not what I expected when preparing it.It did not taste like guacamole at all. Whew! I added peas and corn on top of the pasta and swapped out the cilantro for basil just because I happened to have it on hand. The sauce was very creamy and felt rich and decadent to my mouth with an almost clean and neutral flavor that could have passed for just about anything.

Will definitely make this dish again.

  60. I made this tonight and it’s AMAZING!! I was a little skeptical (the men in the house were especially skeptical), but this stuff if simply amazing and super easy to make. I could eat an entire pot of this stuff. Thanks SO much.

  61. Thank you for this recipe. I am terrible in the kitchen, but I could do this and it was so tasty. It will be something that I can actually cook for my vegetarian boyfriend. That is saying something because I am so unsure in the kitchen, but I can’t wait to make this for him.

  62. This was such a delicious sauce !! I added a table-spoon of Fage Greek yoghurt and a table-spoon of rice vinegar, plus a bit of paprika and all my guests loved it ! Thanks so much for the delicious inspiration !! :o)

  63. Found this on Pinterest, made it last night with bowtie pasta and added soy crumbles – it was incredible. Whole family loved it (including the 17 MO). Even better the next day…

    1. Yes! The lime keeps the sauce from browning. It might brown a smidge, but we even eat it the following day.

  64. Do you by chance know that calorie content on this? I am making this for dinner tonight and I can’t wait to eat it!

  65. I every time spent my half an hour to read this weblog’s content daily along with a mug of coffee.

  66. What a fantastic idea, and I love the simplicity. We’re quinoa pasta fans these days. The flavor and texture is terrific. This is a must-make recipe for sure.

  67. I’ve never heard about avocado sauce for pasta before and as soon as I found this I had to try it! and so I did today. Absolutely loved it!!! Thanks for sharing- I’m always looking for inspiration. Cheers!

  68. Just made the avocado pasta and it is really good. Fast, simple and tasty. Doesn’t get much better than that!

  69. My staunch non vegetarian husband actually called up from his office to say that the pasta was delicious!! Please keep posting unusual easy recipies like these!! Awesome and easy pasta! You guys have some really delicious stuff on your website! Keep up the good work

  70. That is really fascinating, You are an excessively professional blogger.
I’ve joined your rss feed and look forward to in search of extra of your fantastic post. Also, I have shared your web site in my social networks

  71. Okay, a little late to the game here but I had to post nonetheless. I’ve had this recipe sitting in my “to try” pile for ages and never got around to it. My husband and I were both a little skeptical but we shouldn’t have been – it was great. I did have to tweak it a little bit based on what we had on hand – no fresh garlic, so I used powder, no cilantro, and instead of lime I used lemon. Also, I added about a 1/4 cup of parmesan cheese. The whole family loved it – including my 3 year old who is totally “green averse” at the moment. It seriously is one of the easiest recipes I’ve ever made – we were able to go to the pool and still come home and make dinner on time! Got to love that! So thanks so much!

  72. Just made it in under 30 mins, taste okay, im thinking less salt would have made it a little better. I Also must admit that I don’t really like how the garlic goes with the other flavors…. & while I loooooove guacamole I just don’t like it in my pasta. Maybe ill try the way ‘ohsheglows’ does it. I pared it with a salad, and vegan chicken fingers.

  73. Love, Love, LOVE all these avo dishes you’re posting. Somehow, I missed this one, so thank you for the reminder!

  74. Avocado pasta is sooooo good! Maybe not the healthiest dinner option but certainly quick to whip up.

  75. Tried it tonight. Very good. I think next time I’ll add a little olive oil to make it more creamy. What an easy, delicious recipe!

  76. I LUV LUV AVOCADO in many dishes even in cold pasta. This sauce is SO CREAMY AND FINGER LICKING GOOD. LOL Next time ill add steamed broccolli to this dish. Also maybe as a DIP WITH FRESH VEGGIES.AND TOP WITH GREEN ONION. HMMMM This is top notch for hot pasta. OMG and great for a POT LUCK. My mind is working now. Keep avocado recipes coming. TKS

  77. OMG!! This is a keeper. My grandson asked me ” What is this green stuff made of “?
It’s cilantro and avocado,I said. He loved it.I put some water from the boiled spaghetti to make it creamier. I served it with tomato salad and bread. The sauce is delicious.

  78. Meat loving boyfriend loved this dish! Gave it 9 out for 10!! 🙂 Wonderful recipe. Only thing I would add in the future is a little parmesan on top

  79. I made this last night and it was every bit as good as I hoped it would be. I marinated a pound of 31-40 count shrimp in cilantro, lime juice and garlic for 45 minutes then grilled them. Tossed them with the pasta, topped with a tiny bit of parmesan and it was delicious. Thank you so much for this recipe.

  80. 5 stars
My husband and I love this recipe and make it all the time! It’s a super quick and easy week night meal, and perfect for a nice vegetarian night. I top it with chopped almonds or pepitas, parmesan cheese, and cherry tomatoes, and serve with a nice crusty bread.
