Hot Honey Chex Mix: Sweet, Spicy, and Totally Addictive
If you’re anything like me, snack time is serious business. And when it comes to the perfect mix of sweet, salty, and spicy, this Hot Honey Chex Mix hits all the right notes. I first made this for a weekend get-together, and let’s just say it disappeared faster than I could pour it into a bowl.
What I love most about this mix is how versatile it is. It’s perfect for a game day spread, a holiday appetizer table, or just for keeping on hand when a snack craving hits. The combination of crunchy Chex cereal, mini pretzels, bagel chips, and optional peanuts is already amazing, but then you add that hot honey butter coating, and it becomes downright irresistible.
I promise, once you try it, you’ll be making this Hot Honey Chex Mix again and again. It’s simple enough for a weeknight snack but impressive enough to serve at your next party. Plus, it’s customizable…add more spice, swap in your favorite mix-ins, or go nut-free.
Ingredients (with Helpful Notes)

- Chex cereal (Corn, Rice, Wheat): Use a mix of all three for the perfect crunch and texture.
- Pretzels: I like to use mini pretzels, but stick pretzels work too!
- Bagel chips: Look for sturdy chips with ridges so they hold up to the coating and baking.
- Salted peanuts: Adds extra crunch and flavor; omit for nut-free.
- Butter: Cut into pieces for even melting.
- Hot honey: Choose a good-quality hot honey, you can adjust heat level depending on your spice tolerance.
- Dijon mustard & mustard powder: Enhances the flavor complexity and balances the sweetness.
- Garlic & onion powder: These give depth to the mix without overpowering it.
Tips for Making the Chex Mix
- Even coating is key: Pour the hot honey mixture over the cereal slowly and stir gently to make sure everything is evenly coated.
- Stir often while baking: Every 15 minutes, stir, rotate pans, and switch oven racks. This prevents burning and ensures uniform crispiness.
- Don’t rush cooling: Let it cool completely on the baking sheets—the mix will crisp up as it cools.
- Customizations: Try adding sesame sticks, almonds, or even a handful of corn nuts for variety. If you want more spice, add a dash of cayenne pepper.
How to Store
Once completely cooled, store the Chex Mix in an airtight container at room temperature. It will stay crunchy for up to 2 weeks (if it lasts that long!). For longer storage, you can freeze it in a sealed bag for up to a month.

Hot Honey Chex Mix
Ingredients
- 3 cups Corn Chex cereal
- 3 cups Rice Chex cereal
- 3 cups Wheat Chex Cereal
- 2 cups mini pretzels
- 1 cup bagel chips
- 1 cup salted peanuts, optional
- 1/2 cup salted butter, cut into tablespoon pieces
- 1/2 cup hot honey
- 1 1/2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
- 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 3/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon mustard powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 275°F. Line 2 large rimmed baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Mix the dry ingredients. In a very large bowl, combine the Corn Chex, Rice Chex, Wheat Chex, mini pretzels, bagel chips, and peanuts (if using). Gently toss to evenly distribute.
- Make the hot honey butter mixture. In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Whisk in the hot honey, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, mustard powder, and kosher salt until smooth and well combined. Remove from heat.
- Coat the Chex mix. Pour the warm hot honey mixture over the cereal mixture. Use a large spatula to gently stir until everything is evenly coated.
- Bake. Spread the Chex mix into an even layer on the prepared baking sheet(s). Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, stirring well every 15 minutes. Each time you stir, rotate the pans and switch their positions between the middle and bottom oven racks to ensure even baking and prevent hot spots.
- Cool. Remove from the oven and let cool completely on the baking sheet. The Chex mix will crisp up as it cools.
- Serve or store. Once cooled, break into clusters and serve, or store in an airtight container at room temperature.
Notes
- Peanuts are optional, skip for a nut-free version.
- Adjust the heat by choosing milder or spicier hot honey depending on your preference.
- Stir and rotate while baking to prevent burning and ensure even coating.
- Let the mix cool completely on the baking sheet—it crisps up as it cools.
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
