Slow Cooker Pulled Pork Sandwiches
We hosted a Super Bowl party yesterday. It was fun watching the game with good friends and good food. Josh made Slow Cooker Pulled Pork Sandwiches and they were a hit. The best part-we didn’t even have to fuss with the recipe. The slow cooker did all of the work.
We made the pulled pork the night before the party and reheated it when our guests were about to arrive. We served the pulled pork on little sandwich buns. Everyone loved them!
Slow Cooker Pulled Pork Sandwiches
Ingredients
- 2 medium onions chopped
- 1 cup ketchup
- 2/3ย cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 cup tomato paste
- 4 tablespoons paprika
- 1/2 tablespoon cayenne pepper
- 4 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 4 teaspoons salt
- 3ย teaspoons black pepper
- 5 pounds pork butt cut into 2 pieces
- Rolls or buns
Instructions
- 1. Combine all of the ingredients except the pork butt and the buns in a large slow cooker. Stir together with a spoon until well combined. ย Add the 2 pieces of pork and place the lid on the slow cooker. Cook for 8 hours on low or until pork is tender and easily pulls apart from the bone.
- 2. Take two forks and shred the pork. Place the pork back into the slow cooker with the remaining sauce. Stir well and serve on rolls or buns.
- *Note-this recipe makes a lot. Feel free to cut the recipe in half or freeze the leftovers.

Pulled pork is so delicious and I couldn’t get along without my slow cooker!
Last night during super bowl, my husband decided to have the guys over this Friday for a card game. I woke up this morning thinking what am I going to feed these guys. Thank you! I am going to serve your pork sandwiches. Do you have any other ideas for a girl that normally serves tea sandwiches?! Have a golden day! xo
We served homemade fries and sweet potato fries with the sandwiches. We also had chips/salsa and guacamole.

Yummy! This looks like the perfect thing for a weeknight. I’m not surprised that your guests loved it.
Pulled pork is among my favorite things to make for the big game! Usually we do ours on the smoker, but the slow cooker is a great way to do it during the week, or when you do not want to be tied to a smoker all day. Looks really tasty!
I just love slow-cooked pulled pork. Perfect for game day!
My favorite!
I have a very special love for pulled pork because it’s the food that broke me of my vegetarian ways!
These look tasty! We just made chili yesterday for the game, but I do want to make these sometime soon!

Classic! Sometimes a like to put some tangy coleslaw on top! mmm…
Is there anything better? Looks amazing. I like mine with some pickled red onions.
We have this ginornous pork shoulder in the freezer, the intention being to make pulled pork. Have we done it yet? No. And for the life of me I can’t imagine why, yours looks so good. If I show the pics to my husband I am sure he will want to make it right away!
We LOVE pulled pork. A big scoop of coleslaw on top of the sandwich is divine!
I can’t tell you how much I love pulled pork sandwiches and I never make the. These look just perfect and so good!
i simply adore pulled pork. as far as i’m concerned, the only thing missing from your spread is some sloppy cole slaw! ๐
Slow cookers are the best for no-fuss meals. This looks so good. It has been a long while since we’ve cooked a pork butt. This makes me hungry for some BBQ!
Pulled pork po boy sandwiches were one of my favorite things in Texas…time to hit the road again in search of great food
I’m STILL enjoying our superbowl chipotle-spiced pulled pork. It gets better everyday doesnt it?
This looks delicious! I don’t see meat here very often, so this was a real treat for a meat lover like me!!
Glad we could make a meat lover happy:)
I am totally making this for my husband. He will be THRILLED.
I made these yesterday for my boyfriend and I and we both LOVED the sandwiches. I added barbecue sauce and cumin to the recipe, and used regular vinegar. I don’t have a slow cooker yet, so I compensated by using pork tenderloin and cooking it over medium-low heat for around 1 hour and 45 minutes. Also, I suppose that the liquids evaporate faster in a regular pot so near the end I just added more ketchup, vinegar and barbecue sauce.
The meat was so tender, and so flavorful. I served it with fresh made french fries.
Thank you!!!! I can’t wait for leftovers at lunch!
Glad you enjoyed the pulled pork sandwiches!
I made this the other night. Fantastic pork and I love the BBQ sauce! This is a recipe I will be making often!
Looks really tasty. I make pulled pork all the time, and love the sandwiches http://tiny.cc/kjk8w. But I have not used the slow cooker before. Your version looks a bit wetter than mine…I love the idea of the slow cooker though, and am going to give this a try.
Insanely salty. Hard to tell if the flavor is good beyond that because all I can taste is salt (and pepper). Not sure If I did something wrong but the meat and juice consistency came out great.
The biggest pork butt/shoulder I could find was 4 pounds. I used all the right amounts of things still except the salt. I didn’t dare put 7 teaspoons of salt! I only put 2 and it was plenty. I left all the fat while cooking and then pulled the big yucky parts off at the end while I was “pulling”. Didn’t have any tomato paste, so I used 1 cup of tomato puree. No brown sugar, so I used white sugar and molasses. Ended up cooking for about 9 hours.l
I made this last weekend and it was the best pulled pork I’ve ever made! Thank you for the recipe ๐ I did a little post on it, too! http://j.mp/rpcrUW
Glad you liked the pulled pork!
Pulled pork freezes well too! Put the leftovers in a container and freeze, then when you need a quick meal thaw it out and it tastes just as good!
Hi there! I was excited to try my pulled pork recipe. Unfortunately even though I followed your recipe, mine came out SO vinegary tasting that I just can’t finish eating it! I wondered what type of vinegar you use, maybe I’m using the wrong one?
We just use a basic apple cider vinegar-nothing fancy. Sorry it didn’t turn out for you!
Sorry, that was suppose to read my “first” pulled pork recipe ๐
I am halving the recipe – would I cut the cooking time in half, as well?? To 4 hours? I got a 2.5 pound pork shoulder. I’m making this for the Superbowl tomorrow – yum! Found some yummy brioche buns to put it on.
Yes, half the time and test it. Enjoy!
Just made this pulled pork for dinner tonight and it is AMAZING! I even think it’s better than the stuff we usually get at the ribfest they have in the summers here. Thank you!!!
Glad you liked the pulled pork sandwiches!
this looks fab! And, it’s all in my crockpot right now….1.5 more hours before I get to pull it out and shred it!
O my – I have just made this for the first time ever. It is amazing – a little hot and salty – but will definitely make it again with less salt and heat! Any idea how to remove some of the heat??
You can use less cayenne pepper!
I made this for Memorial Day — it was a hit! Everyone had seconds. Thanks for a great, easy recipe!
Do you think Beef could be substituted for pork (dietary restrictions), if so, what type of beef cut would be best? Thanks.
no apple cider vinegar! help! can i use white?
Do you think I could assemble all this stuff in the crockpot the night before, leave it in the fridge, and start in the morning? Sounds like an awesome recipe!!!
Yes, you can assemble everything before and keep it in the fridge.
I made it few days ago and it was delicious! I used a regular pot instead of slow cooker – I just had to pour in some water from time to time.
I also discovered that it tastes good with barley (I don’t know if it popular in US).
Thanks for the great recipe!
Glad you liked it!
It had to much vinager
Thanks so much for this wonderful recipe! I made it for dinner with friends a couple of months ago and served it with homemade buns, dill pickle slices, and red onion. So yummy!!! I’m making it again for friends coming to dinner tomorrow evening. I can’t wait!
I made this for one of our family members funeral, and everyone loved it. Everyone had seconds and it was all gone. I did add some pancake syrup and a little more than required of brown sugar. Delish!
If I put this in a pressure cooker would it still come out tender? How long should I cook it?
what size crockpot are you using? I wanted to make sure this would fit, before I get ingredients. Does it really serve 25 people?
6 quart and yes if you use small slider buns.
some coleslaw on top would be good with that.
This is my go to dish for all โpotluckโ get togethers! So super easy and everyone seems to love it… I never have any leftovers to bring home. We love coleslaw on top and a pickle on the side!
What if I donโt have 8hrs?? Can I cook on high for shorter amount of time?
I love this recipe! My go to for all my potlucks or anytime I have to take something to a party!!! So super easy and delicious! Iโd does make a lot so I usually cut it in half or put the leftovers in a freezer bag and freeze for another quick dinner.
This has become a favorite during family gatherings. So flavorful and easy to put together.
Everyone loved this! I made an 4.4lb and it was done on Low in more like 5 hrs.
Smelled very โketchupโ-forward as it was cooking and i was worried but taste ended up GREAT! Served on brioche rolls topped with slawโฆ
Will definitely make again!
Glad you loved the recipe, thanks for sharing!
I have made this many times for birthdays, memorial services, baby shower, pot lucks and just because. Everybody loves it and asks for the recipe. Only 1 person has said it was too spicy!! LOL
