Chocolate Nutella Cookie Bars with Sea Salt
Updated March 26, 2019
Chocolate Nutella Cookie Bars with Sea Salt-chocolate cookie bars with dark chocolate chunks, a layer of Nutella, and a sprinkle of sea salt. Dessert perfection!
Friday is a very important day. It is World Nutella Day AND my birthday. You better believe we are celebrating. And I wanted to make sure you could celebrate with us, so I am sharing my recipe for Chocolate Nutella Cookie Bars with Sea Salt today so you have plenty of time to buy the ingredients and plan your cookie bar party! I don’t want any excuses, you HAVE to make these cookie bars.
I am obsessed with everything chocolate hazelnut, especially Nutella, so no wonder they chose to make my birthday World Nutella Day. I am so glad they were thinking of ME:)
Cookies are hands down my favorite dessert. We have over 200 cookie recipes on our site. Some might call me crazy, some might suggest cookie therapy, but I am just trying to make the world a better place with cookies! Cookies make everything better. And so for my birthday, we eat cookies!
This year, I am celebrating with Chocolate Nutella Cookie Bars with Sea Salt. These bars are EVERYTHING!
When I dreamt up the recipe in my head, I kind of figured they would be good. I am pretty much a cookie profesh, but I didn’t know they would be eat the whole pan by yourself good! Yep, they are the cookie bars you don’t want to share. The take the pan in the closet and cut square after square kind of good. I didn’t do that, our closet is way to small in our rental house, but I might have taken the pan into the bedroom and hid from the boys:)
The chocolate cookie bars are rich, fudgy and will remind you of a brownie, but in my opinion they are better because, duh, they are cookie bars! The bars are loaded with chocolate chunks and a layer of Nutella. I top them off with a sprinkle of sea salt, which is the perfect finishing touch!
Celebrate World Nutella Day and my birthday on Friday by indulging in these Chocolate Nutella Cookie Bars! They are soooooooo worth it! I might even top mine with a scoop of ice cream. Why not? It’s my birthday!

Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
- 3/4 cup Dutch processed cocoa
- 1 cup unsalted butter at room temperature
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup light brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 1/4 cups chocolate chunks I used Lindt 70% EXCELLENCE Bars
- 1/2 cup Nutella
- Sea salt for sprinkling on cookies
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9x13 pan with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, sea salt, and cocoa. Set aside.
- With a mixer, cream butter and sugars together until smooth. Add in eggs, one at a time. Next, add in vanilla extract and mix until combined.
- Gradually add flour mixture and beat until just combined. Stir in the chocolate chunks. Divide the dough in half. Press half of the dough into the prepared pan. Spread the Nutella over the dough. Top the Nutella evenly with the remaining cookie dough. It is ok if some of the Nutella peaks out, but try to cover it as much as possible. Sprinkle the cookie bars with sea salt.
- Bake cookies for 30 minutes, or until cookie bars are set around the edges, but still a little soft in the center. Don't overbake. Remove from oven and cool on a cooling rack. Cut into squares and serve.

Mmm, nutella and chocolate = the best thing ever!

My son is loves nutella! ย I have to make these for him, but guarantee I will have to make sure he doesn’t eat all of them!
These cookie bars look amazing! I will definitely give them a try
Happy almost birthday! It will be fun to celebrate with these brownies!!
WOW! The nutella sea salt combo has me drooling! Happy (almost) Birthday!
Made these last night – they are divine! I used biscoff spread instead of nutella since we don’t do nuts – still amazing!! And super easy with all the ingredients in the pantry!
Tomorrow = World Nutella Day. These bars = Perfect.
You are a lucky gal to have your birthday on Nutella day!! These bars look amazing, Maria! A perfect way to celebrate. ๐
Oh my goodness, we made these last night… And there is only one small square left tonight. Oops! Haha! These are absolute perfection!!! Definitely lock-yourself-in-the-closet-with-the-pan perfection. ๐
Yay! So glad you liked them!
I’m making these tonight! How many chocolate bars does it take to get 1 & 1/2 c?
2 bars! Enjoy!
I want to make these for a friend. Do you think they would hold up during shipping?
Hope you had a fun birthday!
Yes, they are a sturdy bar and should keep for a few days if packaged well.
At my husband’s request, I made these tonight for a decadent Super Bowl dessert and they did not disappoint! ย He took a bite and told me we had a new front runner for the go to dessert. ย He also knew if it was coming from Two Peas, it was sure to be delicious and he was right! ย Nice work once again!! It was like a brownie and a decadent chocolate chip cookie had a baby ๐ We couldn’t find dutch cocoa at the nearby supermarket, so he just picked up Hershey’s dark cocoa. ย It was quite tasty but we are going to try to go the extra mile next time around and pick up the recommended cocoa as the recipe suggests. ย Thanks!!
I am so happy you liked the bars!
I tried these out last week and they are absolutely brilliant! Family insisted that I make them again soon. Thank you for putting this awesome recipe up ๐
PLEASE don’t support Nutella. ย Their use of palm oil is contributing to the devastation of the rain forests. ย Your buying choices can make an impact!
You can also use Justin’s Chocolate Hazelnut Butter. It is so good!
Hi! I’m wondering if these can be frozen? They look delicious!
I’m trying to picture spreading nutella on the batter. ย Are there any tricks to doing this ‘easily’? ย
Also, dutch-processed cocoa- would Ghirardelli cocoa powder work ok? ย
I want to make these today!
Stir it well, you can even heat it up for 10 seconds in the microwave, but it should spread easily. You can use any cocoa powder, I like Dutch-processed because it is darker and richer. Enjoy!
Could these be made with a gluten free all purpose cup 4 cup flour? Wheat flour is not an option for me.
I haven’t tried it but I bet it will work. I like using that flour!
Made these the other day and they are soooo good! The combination of dark chocolate with Nutella is wonderful. I’ve been using Rodelle’s baking cocoa lately and I really think it also enhances the overall chocolatey flavor. Thank you for the recipe!
You are welcome!
We made these tonight and absolutely loved them!! The Nutella didnโt want to spread so that part was a little tricky, but it all worked out. ย The edges are done just right & the insides are perfect. Definitely will be making these again!ย
So glad you liked the cookie bars.
