Sausage Pasta Ingredients
- Olive oil– for sautéing!
- Sausage– you can use chicken or smoked sausage links. Slice into 1/2-inch thick slices.
- Onion– a yellow or white onion.
- Red bell pepper– seeds removed and diced.
- Garlic– a must for pasta!
- Tomato paste– to give the sauce a rich tomato flavor!
- Kale– we love using kale because it is hearty and holds up nicely, but spinach will also work.
- Diced tomatoes– don’t drain, use the whole can.
- Herbs– dried basil, oregano, and fennel seed.
- Pasta– we use penne pasta, but other small noodles like rotini, farfalle, or orecchiette, will also work. If you need the recipe to be gluten-free, you can use gluten-free pasta.
- Broth– you an use vegetable or chicken broth.
- Mozzarella cheese– we like to use fresh mozzarella because it gets super melty. Just chop it up. If you don’t have fresh mozzarella, you can use shredded mozzarella.

I made this last evening–loved it and so did my Tom! It made a lot for two people but leftovers are always welcome when it’s a good recipe. I didn’t have spinach or kale (next time!) so I put in a can of cannellini beans. I’m glad I went for my cast iron Dutch oven over my 10″ pan as it was filled to the top. Thank you for posting my new favorite!
So easy to make! I didn’t have kale or capsicum but I didn’t miss either. I raced outside and cut some fresh spinach to stir through before serving. It was so yummy, filling and left overs for tomorrow’s lunch. A great twist for sausages!
Glad you liked the pasta!
How do you reheat the leftovers? Do you reheat the One Pot Sausage and Pasta in the same pot in which you originally cooked it?? If so, should you add water or more sauce when reheating this dish? Thank you.
You can reheat in the microwave. If you want to do a large portion, you can put it back in the pot. Cover while heating and stir. If it is dry, add a little water.
Wow, wow, wow! Let me start by saying I have made many “One pot” meals in my years but this one simply works! It was my 12 year olds turn to cook dinner for the family tonight and since we had sausages I googled “One pot sausage” to find him a recipe he could follow. I am so glad I found your recipe. We followed it almost exactly except a few adjustments (macaroni instead of penne, thyme, oregano & mixed herbs, spinach instead of kale) and it turned out wonderfully! The ratio of 2 cups veggie stock to 250grams of macaroni was just right. Didn’t need any extra salt at all! Thankyou, this will now be a regular in our house and my son is very proud of the amazing dinner he cooked for us.
Bomb!! So good I will be making it again. I used bow tie pasta instead of penne and fresh tomatoes instead of canned. Big hit with yhe husband!
So glad you liked the pasta!
This has been a repeat recipe for me in the last 2 or so months. I use gluten free penned and baby spinach instead of kale and often add in some finally diced zucchini for extra vegetables. Loved by hubby and toddlers alike!
Just made this recipe for dinner. Found arugula version, with a nod to your recipe as the inspiration, on different site. Also added double italian sausage , banana peppers and no mozzerella. Lucious – A keeper for sure. Thanks!
Howdy! This is kind of off topic but I need some advice from an established blog. Is it tough to set up your own blog? I’m not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty quick. I’m thinking about creating my own but I’m not sure where to start. Do you have any ideas or suggestions? With thanks

I have been meaning to post a comment on this recipe for awhile. This is a go-to meal in our house. It’s easy to make and the only way I can get my son to eat kale! The whole family loves this. Have been making it for years. Thank you!
So happy you love it!
Hi Maria! For the one pot sausage pasta, are you using raw or fully cooked sausage links? Thanks,Marilyn
This one pot sausage pasta is a big hit in my house! I can’t make enough of it. However, after a few times I decided to try something different. Instead of the sliced sausages, I used ground sausage meat without the casing. It was super! It was much easier to brown the meat that way! One other thing I tried was using chicken sausage instead of pork!! That went over just as well! Enjoy!
Excellent recipe! It’s a weekday favourite. I’ve used Italian sausage and omitted the garlic and peppers. I’ve also substituted kale for rapini and it worked great. Thank you for the great recipe:)
Gjignr8 recipe thanks
I made this last night, and it was a hit! My husband and kids really enjoyed it. I used bratwurst because we had some left over that needed to be used, but other than that I followed the recipe. It had really great flavor and was fairly simple to make. I will definitely make this again.
I just made this last night and it was so delicious and so easy! Will be making this again for sure!
Oh good!!
Love this recipe! Been making it for the past year and my family loves it. Is it possible to double the pasta if I double the broth as well for a bigger crowd?
If you want to double the pasta, make sure you double everything…and make sure you have a big enough pot:)
Love this easy filling tasty !
I have no shortage of pasta dishes in my rotation, but I’m always looking to mix it up with a new one! Glad I found this recipe. I’m not a huge fan of kale so I went the spinach route and just stirred it in at the end. Yum!
Perfect! Spinach is great too.
Love the ingredients but would NEVER cook pasta in the same pot. Always cook the pasta in its own pot. It’s a cardinal sin as an Italian to do that.
I have made this recipe a few times and it one of my favorite. I use Italian Hot sausage to give it a little kick and it is just enough to do it. The Kale is a nice addition for flavor (or you can substitute with baby spinach.) Love, love, love it.
So glad you love this recipe!
This was a real crowd pleaser for my family of four. Thank you!!!
You are welcome!
It is my first review ever but I had to write something!!
This recipe is awesome!! So yammy.
I didn’t have penne so I used cooked spagetti . It worked fine. Next time I will try with penne for sure. I loved little touch of fennel seed. Yum!!
Thanks for taking the time to let us know you loved the recipe.
Really easy dinner, super tasty, easy to clean up and can make easy twists and changes based on what you have. The whole family loved it!
I am so glad the entire family loved this one.
If you have leftovers regarding the, One Pot Sausage Pasta, which is the best way, if possible, to reheat this dish? I just made this dish last night and have plenty leftover and wanted to know the best way to reheat this.
Really appreciate your response. Thanks so much.
I love this recipe! I’ve made it numerous times now and it’s amazing every time.
I add some chilli flakes to it and use spinach instead of kale.
It’s becoming a weekly staple now – thank you!
This was amazing and easy to prepare. Hubby went back for seconds (which he rarely does) and again for thirds. Thank you for sharing this fabulous recipe.
Super good! I added 10 oz portabella mushrooms and some black pepper. We really enjoyed it!
Glad you loved the recipe!
I made this with organic tomatoes and sauce and also fresh herbs-it was delicious!
A good quality pasta also makes a big difference!
Glad you loved it!
It’s absolutely amazing !! Definitely a recipe to keep! I used spinach.
Glad you loved the pasta!
It is a nice dish but it is more of an Italian pasta than Canadian pasta? Am I Right?
Thanks for this delicious recipe
Do most Italians eat this?
I found this on a whim and it was delicious! I even forgot to add the mozzerella and parmesan and we still devoured it and had enough for both for leftovers…I can’t wait to try it leftover with all the sauce soaked in.
Such an easy dinner!
You can use any cheese for paata
Made this tonight. It was really good. Had seconds and all was eaten. Will keep this recipe for the future. Cooked as said except ommited the fennel and we had no kale but I did use some spinach. Didn’t use parmesean but used some mozeralla and shredded cheese mix.
Glad you loved it!
Sometimes, This recipe is vegan nor
Nonveg but it can be vegetarian.
Had high hopes for this but in the end it was a bit bland and very ordinary. Not something I’ll make again. Recipe was well written and easy to follow though.
I made this tonight for the first time. I ended up using yellow and red bell peppers and veggies pasta. It was delicious. Thank you for sharing.
You are welcome. I am glad you liked the recipe.
