Sweet potatoes are very versatile. I love them in salads, tacos, hash, roasted, mashed, stuffed, and of course we can’t forget about sweet potato fries.

Well, during the hot summer months, I love making Grilled Sweet Potatoes. Grilling adds great flavor and the best part? You don’t have to heat up the house.

Plus, you really only need two ingredients, sweet potatoes and oil. Well, and salt and pepper. Of course, you can jazz them up with a variety of seasonings, but they are SO good plain too.

Grill the potatoes until they are soft, tender, and have perfect grill marks. Serve as an appetizer or side dish with your favorite sauces. They go great with any meal! Kids and adults love them!

Simple Ingredients

  • Sweet potatoes– make sure you wash and scrub your sweet potatoes before using. I don’t peel them, but you can.
  • Oil– you can use olive oil or avocado oil.
  • Seasonings– I usually keep things simple and use salt and pepper. If you want to add more flavor, you can toss the sweet potatoes in additional seasonings. A few favorites include: smoked paprika, garlic powder, chili powder, rosemary, thyme, and if you want to add a spicy kick, add a little cayenne pepper. Be careful, a little goes a long way.

How to Grill Sweet Potatoes

  • Oil the grill grates and preheat your grill to medium-high heat.
  • Use a sharp knife to slice the potatoes 1/4-inch-thick rounds. Make sure you cut them the same size so they cook evenly.
  • Place the potatoes in a large bowl and toss with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Use tongs to place the sweet potatoes onto the hot grill. Cook for 4 to 7 minutes on each side or until the potatoes are tender and charred on each side. Check early to be safe, every grill is different.
  • Transfer the potatoes to a plate or platter and serve warm.

Serve with Sauces

The grilled sweet potatoes are good plain, or you can serve them with any of the following condiments.

What to Serve with Grilled Sweet Potatoes

Grilled sweet potatoes can be served as an appetizer or side dish. They go great with almost any meal, but if you need ideas, here are a few of our favorites.

How to Store

Grilled sweet potatoes are best the day they are might, fresh off the grill. If you have leftover sweet potatoes, you can store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

You can reheat them in the air fryer, to crisp them back up. You can also use the oven, microwave, or put them back on the grill for a minute or two.

Yes, I put the sweet potato rounds directly on the grill so they cook quickly and get nice grill marks. I love the charred flavor.

  1. I grew sweet potatoes for the first time this year. I took a big one and followed your recipe. They were great and might be my new favorite way to eat them! Thanks for posting this.

    Hi Maria,

I’m not of fan of sweet potatoes, as a matter of fact I can’t stand them. My daughter came down for a visit and I was going to grill up a bunch of other things and my daughter asked me to make some grilled sweet potatoes. I’ve never made them before but found your recipe. They turned out great according to my daughter and two sons. I was told I had to make them again some time. My wife said she could take or leave them or leave them. I still didn’t like them, but that’s just me regardless how they are cooked.

Never thought to try grilling sweet potatoes for some reason. Did this yesterday using a fine metal cooling rack on the grill. Added a little rosemary from our bush to toss with the olive oil, salt and ground pepper on some potatoes left over from last year. Potatoes came out crispy and sweet. Fantastic, easy and super tasty with the strip steak and garlic bread.
